Czerny - Andante Sostenuto op 627 no 2

in #secretsoforganplaying5 years ago (edited)

I am presenting the second of 12 pieces of Carl Czerny’s op 627. Czerny, whose fame rests on being a student of Beethoven and also the composer of numerous piano studies, is hardly associated with the organ. He wrote three sets: op 603, op 627 and op 698. Whilst op 603 and op 698 require pedals, op 627 was written for manuals only. In my performance, I have used pedals in places where the manual stretches are large and also to facilitate a more legato when he writes octaves in the left hand. The work features Czerny’s mastery of counterpoint and melody. The manual is coupled to the pedal without the pedal 16’.

The organ upon which I am performing is by Forster & Andrews from Hull, England and was built in 1882. It has a single manual with pedals with 6 manual stops and one for the pedal with a manual to pedal coupled. I am using the Open Diapason, Stopped Diapason and Oboe registers.

I liked the sound of oboe. Very solid fugue. You can use palnet tag as well to start earning PAL coin.

Thanks. The F & A oboe is a good chorus reed. It comes alive with the other unison stops and also makes a good impact in full organ. I'll add the palnet tag. I am still quite a novice in Steemit!

Also as a pianist, I only thought Czerny wrote only exercises. I will have to look into his organ works more. Thanks for sharing.

Czerny is a solid composer and was a student of Beethoven. I first came across his organ compositions in a recording by Michel Chapuis playing the famous Riepp organ in collegiate church of Dôle in France. There are three collections of his organ pieces op 603, op 627 and op 698. It is an understatement to say he was a most prolific composer.

@tormus1958 Wasn’t he also a student of Liszt?

Actually, it was the other way around: Liszt took piano lessons from Czerny.

Surprising. I knew Czerny had written more than only his infamous exercises; that he wrote for organ as well is new to me. Sounds nice enough. Are scores of his organ music available on IMSLP? I'm going to look for them.

There is little on Czerny's organ music on IMSLP. I recall seeing only a Prelude and Fugue in D Minor. You can obtain all three collections of his organ pieces from Chanvrelin.
