Secrets of Organ Playing Contest--Week 53 Submission--J.S. Bach Das Alte Jahr Vergangen ist BWV 614
This is for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 53. As we bring in the New Year, we say goodbye to the old. As the Netherlands Bach Society website claims, a New Year Hymn is usually "innoucous and cheerful." "Yet here Bach made a fairly chromatic and melancholy arrangement of Das alte Jahr vergangen ist. He was undoubtedly aware of the fact that the hymn was not merely innocuous." In this prelude, Bach becomes the teacher, showing organists how to elaborate on the hymn tune as it soars over the accompaniment in the lower manuals and pedals. It is a wonderful prelude that both looks back to the past in its contrapuntal setting as well as looks forward to the future in its chromatic harmonies.
