These Sears and Kmart stores will start liquidation sales on August 30th
The onslaught of retail continues.
This sector saw the likes of Amazon enter the marketplace and take control. It was a move that went unnoticed for years until everyone woke up one day and realized they were "Amazoned". Since that time, traditional retailers have been doing all they can to hang on. Some, like Wal-Mart are investing billions to turn their operation into a more digital friendly system. Others, who do not have as big a wallet, are falling by the wayside.

None is suffering more than Sears Holding, the owner of both Sears and KMart.
This week, 46 stores will start liquidation sales to move inventory as they move towards closure in November. The stores are in 28 states and 33 come from the Sears side while the other 13 are under the KMart brand.
The company identified 100 non-profitable stores that are slated to close. 72 of these will begin closing in coming months.
So far this month, the stock price fell 40%.
The retailer is likely headed towards bankruptcy. This process started years ago and only was masked by the financial maneuverings of the CEO, Eddie Lampert. He is not only CEO of Sears Holding, he is also hedge fund manager, and real estate owner of some of Sears' properties. This convoluted layering has led some to believe a lot of what took place over the past half decade was nothing more than a smokescreen to cover the fact that the company is going under.
There is also speculation that Lampert switched his retailer CEO hat for his hedge fund manager hat a few years ago. He is looking to possible coming out of this making money. The proposition for his hedge fund to buy some of Sears more popular brands like Kenmore show where his interest lies.
Lampert was the one who spent a decade at the helm and missed the entire shift in the retail industry. The fact that Sears did not focus on their online retailing nor update their dwindling store inventories show how out of touch he became.
The end result of this most likely will be the loss of another American retailing institution.

I worked at Sears in college. I got written up for not pushing their Sears card on customers enough. The interest rates were predatory and the only people who ever signed up were people who had no business having a high interest rate charge card. It sucks to see an American institution fail, but it’s hard to feel bad for them. Plus, they’ve been bleeding to death for decades and haven’t really done anything to try and stop it.

it's their own fault, they could be Amazon but they closed down their catalog instead of putting it online. Their current website is atrocious, unusable, if you can't field a working website then you go out of business. It's really not hard to have a website that works but SEARS never does. SEARS only hope is to partner with a celebrity chef and open high end restaurants and/or mini golf courses in their stores, that sort of thing. They need to make their stores into an attraction.
The power of online business is getting stronger and the retailers are suffering from loss of they are moving out of business. They are actually kicked out of business eventually!

Digitization is the way ahead... Goodbye to the brick and mortar way of operation
There is still a huge need for physical stores - a place to actually see products before buying them, a convenient place to pick up things you have ordered, a place to go to ask for sales/tech advice, etc. We see Amazon starting to move in this direction with their pickup lockers and physical stores (not to mention the pruchase of Whole Foods).
In the end, though, this is more like the taxi industry or video rental... The incumbents had the advantage in that they were potentially able to pivot and shift. They have failed - so has Sears. Its a tough thing to do, but its possible. I don't like to see the loss of competitors, but companies have got to innovate and adapt, The world changes too much now.
