Theory of a super-organism-Hive Life

in #science7 years ago

Yesterday I was reading an article on the hive mentality of bees. And then, I had an epiphany.

The article talks about the work of Thomas Seeley, the head of department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University. In his work 'Honeybee Democracy' he has discussed the concept of super organism. He used that term for the collection of bees that make up a hive. It says:

"We will see that the 1.5 kilograms (3 pounds) of bees in a honeybee swarm, just like the 1.5 kilograms (3 pounds) of neurons in a human brain, achieve their collective wisdom by organizing themselves in such a way that even though each individual has limited information and limited intelligence, the group as a whole makes first-rate collective.
Like many other biologists, Seeley sees a bee colony as not just a collection of individuals but as a sort of super-organism. Thus the brain analogy above. Thus this:
A colony of honeybees is, then, far more than an aggregation of individuals, it is a composite being that functions as an integrated whole. Indeed, one can accurately think of a honeybee colony as a single living entity, weighing as much as 5 kilograms (10 pounds) and performing all of the basic physiological processes that support life: ingesting and digesting food, maintaining nutritional balance, circulating resources, exchanging respiratory gases, regulating water content, controlling body temperature, sensing the environment, deciding how to behave, and achieving locomotion."

This led me to think of something wonderful, something if we humans had what would life be like. From the advent of time, mankind has been more inclined towards division than unity. Yes there have been many people who spent there lives trying to unite the would but it's a task extremely complicated. Now, if you directly apply the concept that we studied above, we humans as well could turn into a super-organism. Where people would be working towards a common goal, together. Yes there'd be a division of labor, everyone would work on things that their expertise allows but there will be unity in this division too, a perfect harmony. If manage to achieve that, we will become a collective just like those bees, not just super but a mega organism, and that'd mark the epoch of mankind's journey towards true knowledge. Our countries and people have spent zillions trying to fight each other, kill each other off and what did we get out of that?

Instead of this, if we were united, there would be no famine today as we could have extensive research in the fields of agriculture abd hybrid technology. All that money could be spent on cancer research, AIDS research among thousands of other diseases that we fail against today. We would have better technology, kids in Africa or anywhere in the world wouldn't be starving. Better lives for everyone, shouldn't that be our legacy to this world? Our globe should have only two colors and no lines running through it. How easy would life be? It's when we start seeing ourselves in as part of this hive called earth that we can venture into the vastness of our cosmos, discover life elsewhere as well, understand the dimensional nature of time. Humans have the capacity to learn anything they want if they stretch their brain far enough. We can contain the entire knowledge of universe in us. But we can only do that once we free ourselves of ridiculous, childish, egotistic wars. The universe will be our home and there'll be land and a good life for everyone everywhere.

@things Yes really good post. Followed

good post

I would argue that humans are already superorgainisms. It may seem like many humans are devided, but were really not. Most people play a part that helps the life and evolution of our species.

A doctor can't save lives when hes out hunting for his food. A clerk can't sell food when their constantly getting robbed. A cop cant protect and serve when no one is giving him a pay check.
