Laniakea - a HUGE map

in #science7 years ago
What is the largest map that we've of the Universe?

One of the most representative constants of humankind is that we crave to feel small. We are beginning to become godlike, different from other animals, plants and any other living organism that we know of; created in the image and likeness of whatever we may believe in... That is made in the image and likeness of us.
But, being the center of the Universe was just not enough for us, we wanted to be a part of something bigger. Copernicus helped us place the Earth around a star and Darwin to place us off-center of the creation.
This was not enough, we decided to become even smaller and look even further. We drew the Milky Way and we became a speck of dust. Again, we do not exist out of conformism.

Some scientists decided to beat us up with some humility, the strongest blow since Copernicus and redefined the group of galaxies that contains the speck of dust... our galaxy is.
Millions of years after being born in existence, we gave a name to the immeasurable sky that surrounds us:

Laniakea

In the largest map of human history, we have one with 100000 galaxies bound by invisible strings of gravity, with an extension of over 520 million light years wide and a mass of 1017 Suns.
