Reference is made to a meaning which relates to chaos theory to describe small variations that can affect large and complex systems.

What the butterfly effect seems to pose, is that the prediction of the behavior of any great system is practically impossible unless one can consider all the small factors that influence them, which could have a drastic effect on the system.

Example. Imagine that they are sitting at home and have to decide what to do that afternoon, they could go to see a friend, have fun and go home; This decision would result in a simple moment of sharing. Instead they might decide to stay in their house and by mistake they turn off the burning stove in the kitchen, have an accident and burn their hands, which would have as a consequence, suffering, pain, hospitals, probably life-long scars. They could also go out into the street to sit in a café meeting a person and end up living together, which would trigger a chain of events that would probably involve moving, new experiences, maybe children.

Each of the actions of our lives and each of the decisions triggers a domino effect that conditions our future.
