New Study Investigates Eating Habits Associated With National Sporting Events

in #science8 years ago

There are some typical game-day dishes that you can always expect to find whenever there is some national sporting event taking place. Items like wings, pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs, and a lot of other popular choices. It's typical for many people to really go on a binge while watching their favorite sporting event and according to a new study investigating eating habits associated with sporting events and holidays; more patients seek treatment over bad choices made during these times.

Many people are going to overeat while they are watching those games, or having a big dinner with their family, and it's going to potentially lead to medical problems for them, the study says.

It's estimated that those who overeat during holidays and sporting events, are 10x more likely to need emergency medical attention.

The study was led by researchers at the University of Florida, and they collected data over an 11-year period from an emergency room in Boston. They saw a clear pattern, in higher emergency room visits either during or just after a big holiday or national sporting event.

In some cases, many individuals had blockages or food that directly impacted their esophagus. The majority of patients that they saw visiting were also men and the most popular holiday for emergency room visits was the Thanksgiving holiday.

Both serving size and consumption time were listed as risk factors, along with alcohol consumption.

They looked at data from 2001 to 2012, and 38 people had undergone emergency procedures for their bad binge-eating choices. For holidays and sporting events, the most common impacted food was turkey, followed by chicken, and then beef. The researchers urge the public to consider not only what they are eating during these events, but also to consider the portion size as well.
