Type 2 Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet - [Dr. Sarah Hallberg]

in #science6 years ago

Dr. Sarah Hallberg, of Virta Health, is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine and also the American Board of Internal Medicine and practice as a primary care physician for eight years.

She's been giving numerous talks at different conferences about low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets for the treatment (yes, treatment) of obesity and diabetes. Why do I say treatment?

Well, here we're not talking about woo-woo non-sense like homeopathy, but actual physiologic effects of dietary interventions. In Type 2 Diabetes we know that the body is very inefficient in managing blood glucose. This happens for a whole host of causes.

Removing or severely restricting dietary carbohydrate will lead to the body not having to do the inefficient and burdensome processing and instead use fat for fuel, and make the essential endogenous glucose through gluconeogenesis.

Sadly, it is still not the main intervention of conventional medicine, which in fact is in favor of drug treatment and insulin injections, leaving diet and lifestyle at the bottom of the list.

Conventional medicine is great, don't get me wrong! But, it's just, for some wanted and unwanted reasons, they don't take this as a primary line of intervention. Anyway, I'll leave Sarah, discuss how the ketogenic diet treats type 2 diabetes.

Sarah has brought about a very great idea here, let's hope it cures the ailment.

interesting. im generally skeptical of fad diets, of which ketosis currently is. But its prevalence, and this talk tells me its something i need to do more research on.

DASH diet is new concept to me. So as you can imagine I paused the video at around 12 minute mark and started to search about it on the internet. I found a surprising amount of information on the internet and nhlbi website was one of the top results.

If Dr. Halberg's facts are correct and a single trial of 31 patients was enough to make DASH a recommended diet nationally and internationally ............. then I am more than worried about the situation. I think we all should be because this also raises questions about other recommendations and the validity of the scope of their trials.
