RE: Only 6% of Drug Advertising Material is Supported by Scientific Evidence - British Medical Journal

in #science6 years ago

Great article. As a doctor this is so true that we rely on our information being accurate, and as said we just don't have the time to source check every drug that is used.
There is a huge push for true evidence based medicine at the moment which is fantastic but unfortunately its really only just beginning. A lot of what we prescribe, as well as other elements of clinical medicine, are still used because thats what has always been done.
There is definitely something to be said for clinical experience over the course of a career but we do need to start questions why things are done otherwise progress just won't be made.
As for medication - new and old - It will take a while before everything has been thoroughly researched and that will just never happen with some of the bad practice seen by the pharmaceutical industry.
Anymore more interested please read 'Bad Pharma' by Ben Goldacre - a very interesting read detailing this topic.

Am out of voting power and trying to let it build up "again" but had to at least comment on here and thank you for the reference to "Bad Pharma" as this sounds like a great book to promote to those that are still stuck in the revolving door of big pharma.
