The two scavengers walked awarily to where the armored assailant had fallen, their weapons at the ready in case this person was ready to spring new surprises. Even with the heavy armor, it was quite obvious that the person was breathing heavily. His exhalations sounded like the hissing of steam escaping a pressurized cooker.

Suddenly there was a clicking sound, and the helmet opened, releasing a lot of strange vapour. Sasha and Jed drew back and readied their weapons, but the creature on the ground did not seem inclined to battle further.

As the vapors dissipated, they could see a head. It was human, or at least as far as shape was concerned. The skin of this creature was grey, and the facial features were humanoid, but looked more metallic than fleshy. It opened its mouth in what looked like an expression of pain, and there was a loud rasp.

Jed wished he had not struck this creature such a blow, when it had engaged them, for he felt some degree of pity towards it. However, it had been necessary to defend himself, and if the creature attacked, he would respond similarly again.

“Do you understand us?” he asked, hoping it was possible to establish communication with the strange creature. At the sound of his voice, it turned to look at him sharply, an expression that seemed curious written on its face. Then it opened its mouth, and a series of strange bleeps and whines, rather more artificial than organic.

Jed and Sasha looked at each other. The creature, sensing that they did not understand, paused a moment, furrowing its brow. Then Sasha heard a voice ring in her head. Her ears did not pick it; it was as though the sound had just exploded into existence in her brain.

She looked over at Jed. The expression on his face showed that he had heard whatever she had heard too. “Do you understand me now?” the voice asked. They looked at the armored grey-skinned creature now sitting up and looking at them inquisitively.

“Yes,” Sasha said aloud. The creature’s features relaxed, and it nodded. “Do not be alarmed,” the telepathic voice continued, “I did not mean to come off as hostile as I had shown. It was not a deliberate intention.”

“Who, or what, are you?” Jed asked. The creature pointed to the sky. “I come from beyond this planet,” said the voice, “from the mother around which this child revolves.”

“It’s from Rabsaris!” Sasha said in disbelief.
