JOHN CHAPTER 19.png

  1. So then Pilate took Jesus and had Him scourged (flogged, whipped).

  2. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe around Him;

  3. and they kept coming up to Him, saying [mockingly], “Hail, King of the Jews [Good health! Peace! Long life to you, King of the Jews]!” And they slapped Him in the face.

  4. Then Pilate came out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him [no crime, no cause for an accusation].”

  5. So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, “Look! The Man!”

  6. When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify [Him]! Crucify [Him]!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him [no crime, no cause for an accusation].”

  7. The Jews answered him, “We have a law [regarding blasphemy], and according to that law He should die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”

  8. So when Pilate heard this said, he was [even] more alarmed and afraid.

  9. He went into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus did not answer him.

  10. So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”

  11. Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the sin and guilt of the one who handed Me over to you is greater [than your own].”

  12. As a result of this, Pilate kept making efforts to release Him, but the Jews kept screaming, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar! Anyone who makes himself out [to be] a king opposes Caesar [and rebels against the emperor]!”

  13. When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

  14. Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover [week], and it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Look, your King!”

  15. But they shouted, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

  16. Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified.

  17. So they took Jesus, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of the Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.

  18. There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

  19. Pilate also wrote an inscription [on a placard] and put it on the cross. And it was written: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

  20. And many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

  21. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but, ‘He said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”

  22. Pilate replied, “What I have written I have written [and it remains written].”

  23. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer clothes and made four parts, a part for each soldier, and also the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven [in one piece] from the top throughout.

  24. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it will be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture, “They divided My outer clothing among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”

  25. So the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, His mother’s sister [Salome], Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

  26. So Jesus, seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved (esteemed) standing near, said to His mother, “[Dear] woman, look, [here is] your son!”

  27. Then He said to the disciple (John), “Look! [here is] your mother [protect and provide for her]!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

  28. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said in fulfillment of the Scripture, “I am thirsty.”

  29. A jar full of sour wine was placed there; so they put a sponge soaked in the sour wine on [a branch of] hyssop and held it to His mouth.

  30. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit.

  31. Since it was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten death] and the bodies taken away.

  32. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who had been crucified with Him.

  33. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

  34. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came [flowing] out.

  35. And he (John, the eyewitness) who has seen it has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also [who read this] may believe.

  36. For these things took place to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of His shall be broken.”

  37. And again another Scripture says, “They shall look at Him whom they have pierced.”

  38. And after this, Joseph of Arimathea—a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews—asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away His body.

  39. Nicodemus, who had first come to Him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, [weighing] about a hundred [Roman] pounds.

  40. So they took Jesus’ body and bound it in linen wrappings with the fragrant spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  41. Now there was a garden at the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb [cut out of solid rock] in which no one had yet been laid.

  42. Therefore, because of the Jewish day of Preparation, and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

They also try to torture him by placing a crown made of thorns on his head and a purple robe (color of royalty), pointing him out as accused of believing himself king of the Jews. His torture is vile and ruthless, now they make fun of him screaming him king of the Jews, while they slap him. Each space of time until his crucifixion, is full of difficult tests, ridicule, rejection, denial, beatings, torture, it is Christ himself submitting himself voluntarily to give his life. So much pain, suffering and shame to which he has submitted must make us reflect on our nature and the truth of the love of God, capable of surrendering for humanity.
Juan prefers not to describe the whole journey, so that the torture crucifixion becomes extremely painful. He describes in the same way that beside him there are two other prisoners, one on each side, Jesus being placed in their midst. What a deep sadness that our being must feel when seeing there put between criminals the purest, the most just, the only one without sin. Much has been said about this passage, the traditional church relies on it to accommodate a certain preeminence over Mary the mother of Jesus, as if wanting to give him some design of intercessor. But, as we can see, the passage at no time makes such a statement, it is clear, that Mary understood his purpose according to God's call and would never dare to take such a place, which he recognized belonged to Jesus Christ, his son on earth. As a faithful warrior awaits in Christ also his salvation and what happens here, is a sample of filial love in which his beloved disciple is responsible for taking care of his beloved mother, if it has any spiritual meaning, is that every believer must have towards Mary, an immense gratitude for such a tremendous sacrifice of love towards God, her womb saw the savior born and Jesus in John asks us as disciples to take care of Mary (referring to her church), because he said "Because everyone who does the will of my Father who heavens them, that is my brother, and sister, and mother "(Mat 12:50) and those who obey the will of the Father are the church (understand church as the community of beings that lives in obedience to with the Father).

When reflect on the torture, pain and agony He went through just to redeem humanity. I can't help but sing:

Just for me, He came and died;
Just for me, He gave it all
Just for me, the veil is broken;
Am no longer bound;
Jesus did it just for me

Oh how beautiful, even in death, He remained Lord, He lay on a "tear rubber" tomb

Now there was a garden at the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb [cut out of solid rock] in which no one had yet been laid. - v.41

Indeed a "tear rubber tomb".
I love this.

Thanks so much for sharing @uyobong

For me, this is one of the saddest chapters, where relate us everything that our Lord suffered for us, for our sins, for LOVE to we. Without complaining, without denying, without hating. He fulfilled his purpose in this life, for us.

Pilate told Jesus something in vs 10

Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?

Look at Jesus reply in the next verse

You would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above.

I looked at the scenario leading to this and I found that Jesus died because He kept His mouth shut.(basically bcos it was time to die)

Do you know they had tried killing Him several times and He escaped, even at gethsamane, when Judas and others came, whenever He opened His mouth, they fell backwards.

What is my point?
If you keep quiet in situations and not speak authoritatively against it, it will wash you away. Life and death is in our tongue, we should speak life continually.

Dont keep quiet, use the power in the word of God and deal with life situations, God bless us

Jesus allowed Himself to be judged, humiliated and at the end crucified for what purpose? For the salvation of all humanity. I thank God for this salvation

verse 19> Pilate also wrote an inscription [on a placard] and put it on the cross. And it was written: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

It so funny that the jews never accepted Jesus as their king but yet in the verse above we can see that they indirectly accepted him, that Pilate wrote it and hanged it on the cross.

The God who caused the Jews to announce Jesus as their King will cause your enemy to introduce you unknowingly. Just hold on and hold tight.

In the Verse 19:11 Jesus was not intimidated by Pilate. He knew who he was and why he had come! The Bible affirms that God is behind all human authority

Christ paid with his own life the price of our redemption, from his death on the cross, we are all transgressors, because we have rebelled in one way or another against the will of God, but Christ paid for our rebellions, t cause of us endured all kinds of insults and derision, all for love of us.
Thank you @relicuary, for reminding us through this chapter of the immense love of God, for us.

This chapter @relicuary reminds us that Jesus suffered inhuman treatment at the hands of Pilate's soldiers, the biblical story implies that everyone rejoiced making Jesus a toy for their own fun and entertainment, by applying cruel and shameful punishments before take them to the cross, these acts of cruelty were beyond legal permission, but for the Romans of that time suffering caused them pleasure, then, the hatred and armor that was in his heart was too strong, product of his sin.
All this Jesus did for the great love with which he loved us, because, in truth, Christ was the King of the Jews, and now he was giving his life to be a spiritual King, whose kingdom is interntional. "of all lineage and language and people and nation".
And something that draws my attention is that the common theme of all these insults was for Jesus to come down from the cross and get rid of all his tortures, but, do you know why he did not ?, because in reality, what made him incapable Jesus to descend from the cross and get rid of all his tortures was not weakness or lack of power, but his deep love for the sinner. General Booth (founder of the exercise of salvation) once said: "precisely because he did not come down from the cross is that we believe in him", the Jews only knew about the manifestation of God's power, but now Jesus was demonstrating the other aspect that they did not know: God is love.

These events were the most tragic events that our Lord Jesus lived, the crucifixion was the most ruthless of the methods of execution used by the Romans, reserved only for slaves and criminals. And our beloved Lord, was subjected to all this cruelty for master, until the end of his life, Jesus demonstrated the priority he had given to love and his concern in human relationships.
This act, the vilest and most cruel of humanity, must have a reward, for us: to be faithful to who gave his life to save us.
