Song of the Day – Marin Marais (1656 – 1728) - Tombeau pour Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe

in #recordpool6 years ago (edited)

Marin Marais was born into a modest family, son of Catherine Bellanger, and Vincent Marais, a shoes manufacturer.

In 1667, he joined the choir of the Church Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, where he met Michel-Richard Delalande (1657 - 1726), and Jean-François Lalouette (1651-1728). Two young guys who later became great composers representing the French Baroque.

At the age of 16, he perfected himself in the viol bass with Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (1640 - 1693), a legend of French Baroque music, which, despite very little information about him, has a lot of compliments registred coming from his students.

"Tombeau pour Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe", is a posthumous homage of Marais to his teacher. The biographer and chronicler Évrard Titon du Tillet (1677-1762) reported that by spending six months of classes, Sainte-Colombe dismissed Marin from his classes for not having more to teach him, yet this, the young composer was hiding close to your desk, to try to unravel the master's secrets. According to the biographer, Marais was discovered, and punished for his attitude.

Despite the punishment, which i dont known what was, the birthday of today has nurtured admiration, respect, and affection for his master. He had a prolific career with the viol. Worked in the orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music of France under the regency of Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 - 1687). Married with Catherine Darnicourt, with whom had more than fifteen children, and wrote about six hundred works for his instrument.

Hope you like it!
