Song of the Day - Concert for piano nº 5 in E flat major Op 73. "Emperor" by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

in #recordpool6 years ago

This is the last concert for piano and orchestra written by Beethoven. Composed between 1808/1811, between the sixth (1805/1808) and the seventh (1811) symphonies. Dedicated to his patron and pupil, Archduke Rodolphe of Austria, made his debut on November 28, 1811 by the Gewandhaus Leipzig orchestra, under the regency of Johann Philipp Christian Schulz (1773 - 1827. The soloist was not Ludwig, whose deafness was already well advanced, but the composer and pianist Johann Christian Friedrich Schneider (1789 - 1853).

Beethoven never had sympathy and deference for emperors, having even ripped the manuscript of the 3rd symphony, after Napoleon declared himself emperor of France, and proved contrary to the ideals of the French revolution. The subtitle "Emperor" of this work was probably given by the publisher in London, the German pianist Johann B. Cramer (1771 - 1858).

The name took, the subtitle corresponds with this military style of its writing, inherited of the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824). As we see in the first movement the work has a firm beginning, that in the course of the execution is crossed, surpassed, and we are caught unprepared by the genius of Ludwig in contrasting strong and delicate subjects. Perhaps the greatest while in this work.

The first movement "Allegro" begins with an introduction of the piano with some scores of the orchestra, which then spreads the two main themes. As in Eisenstein's theory of assembly, in which from two images a third signification is born, here the themes transform, develop, produce a new one. Characteristic of the sonata form with the structure of discursive thought divided into three phases (exhibition, development, and reexposure).

The dramatic character of discursive logic is defined by the gesture (rhythm), word (melody), characters (themes) and field (harmony) where action unfolds. Listen carefully, at 18 minutes and 39 seconds of this video this will be transparent as water.

The second movement "Adagio un poco moto" is fascinating. As Daniel Bareinboim wrote, an interpreter and conductor of the video I brought to you, in his book "Music Quickens Time", "music is not separated from the world, it can help us to forget and at the same time to understand ourselves." Of meditative character or the sound of strings spring from the silence in an expressive melody. The piano enters into perfect dialogue with the orchestra in a different theme. A work of simple, brilliantly simple melodies. The greatest model of piano-orchestra integration for Hector Berlioz, and inspiration for the music of Leonard Bernstein, “Somewhere” do musical West Side Story. of the musical West Side Story.

The third movement "Rondo. Allegro" appears connected to the second, without pauses. The entrees are accurate and relentless. Themes are presented differently than the first. (A, B, A, C, A, B, B, C), and (A) A), with several orchestral and melodic variations. Well defined, each in its place the rule of thumb. But Bethoveen subverts order, and in the third theme (C) he performs several variations of the first in different tonalities (different field of action), as a "development" imported from the sonata form.

I hope you enjoy, in this video Daniel Barenboim, acts as soloist and conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin, at the Klavierfestival Ruhr, Jahrhunderthalle Bochum theater.

A great hug
