Song of the day - Overture from the Nutcracker Suite (Tchaikovsky)
This is my submission for the Song of the Day by @recordpool
The Nutcracker Suite (and the 2 act ballet) is one of the best known pieces of all Western "Classical" Music. It is a piece that has appeared in cartoon and popular culture everywhere, and it is instantly recognisable, especially the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.
However, my choice from the ballet is the instrumental overture that begins the ballet (and suite). An overture is usually the orchestral piece that begins a ballet or an opera performance. Originally intended as a way to get the audience's attention and to let them know that show was about to start (and also to set the atmosphere for the opening act). However, in my eyes (ears), it is usually the place where some of the best music was composed.
The Overture from the Nutcracker is one of absolute delight and wide eyed wonder! From the cheekily joyful beginning to the constant off beats near the end... it brings to mind the wonder of a child on the night before Christmas, the anticipation of something really wonderful that is about to happen!
It was surprisingly difficult to find a performance that really conveyed the joy. I settled on the one above, which is almost perfect for me, except for the image!
My oldest daughter loved (and still loves) this piece, it was the piece that she did her first dance performance to... and she would spend hours watching the ballet (see below) on the TV! She just loved it so much. Of course, the music is great and the staging is beautiful!
