the fortress of St. Clement

"Castelo" is the name given to this building by the locals, it was built at the beginning of the 17th century, in 1602 to be exact, and at that time it was used to fight piracy at sea. The "Castelo" was then one of the most important and prestigious defensive systems, both to protect and defend the village of Milfontes and to preserve the maritime trade of Odemira, for which Milfontes, with its famous river mouth as a port entrance, played an extremely important role.

This ancient fortress called Sant Clement, dating from the XVIIIth century, is the most important one. Century in "Vila Nova de Milfontes" is located directly on the river Mira and was rebuilt and renovated in 1998. Now it is in private hands and tourists have no public access to it. I think I have heard that you can stay there (like in a hotel) to spend your holidays in a decent accommodation.

Aviation

The almost inconspicuous little village "Vila Nova de Milfontes" is closely linked to the great achievement of Portuguese aviation, who would have thought this? After all, the first air crossing between Portugal and Macau was carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was written April 7th 1924, a hopefully beautiful day, when the pilots from the "Campo dos Coitos" near Milfontes set off for the Orient.

To commemorate and appreciate this event and the pilots and their historical achievement, a monument was erected in the square "Praça da Barbacã" next to the fortress of St. Clement, which is a constant reminder of the heroic journey. If one takes into consideration and notes that the Commander Brito Paes was also born in the district of Odemira, more precisely in Colos.

"Villa Nova de Milfontes" is to my knowledge the oldest and possibly even the most famous municipality in the district of Odemira. It was founded by a royal decree of King John II in 1486 and thus declared a county. Through an administrative reform of the 19th century, this municipality was incorporated into the county of Odemira.

The village grew in popularity and population and is located at the mouth of the river Mira, it developed with the inland port, and for many centuries Milfontes even formed an outer port of Odemira.

For centuries this small town has had an exciting history because of the dangers from the sea. It was this strategic location that attracted long periods of piracy and buccaneers.

In 1590, a powerful attack by pirates took place, which even destroyed the village.

"Castelo" é o nome dado a este edifício pelos habitantes locais, foi construído no início do século XVII, em 1602 para ser exacto, e nessa altura era utilizado para combater a pirataria no mar. O "Castelo" foi então um dos mais importantes e prestigiados sistemas defensivos, quer para proteger e defender a vila de Milfontes, quer para preservar o comércio marítimo de Odemira, para o qual Milfontes, com a sua famosa foz como entrada do porto, desempenhou um papel extremamente importante.
Esta antiga fortaleza chamada Sant Clemente, datada do século XVIII, é a mais importante. Século XVIII em Vila Nova de Milfontes está situada directamente sobre o rio Mira e foi reconstruída e renovada em 1998. Agora está em mãos privadas e os turistas não têm acesso público a ela. Acho que já ouvi dizer que se pode lá ficar (como num hotel) para passar as férias num alojamento decente.

A pequena aldeia quase imperceptível "Vila Nova de Milfontes" está intimamente ligada ao grande feito da aviação portuguesa, quem teria pensado isso? Afinal, a primeira travessia aérea entre Portugal e Macau foi realizada por Brito Paes e Sarmento Beires. Foi escrita a 7 de Abril de 1924, um dia esperançosamente bonito, quando os pilotos do Campo dos Coitos perto de Milfontes partiram para o Oriente.
Para comemorar e apreciar este evento e os pilotos e o seu feito histórico, foi erguido um monumento na Praça da Barbacã, ao lado da fortaleza de São Clemente, que é uma constante recordação da heróica viagem. Se tivermos em conta e observarmos que o Comandante Brito Paes também nasceu no distrito de Odemira, mais precisamente em Colos.

"Villa Nova de Milfontes" é, que eu saiba, o mais antigo e possivelmente até o mais famoso município do distrito de Odemira. Foi fundada por decreto real de D. João II em 1486 e assim declarada concelho. Através de uma reforma administrativa do século XIX, este concelho foi incorporado no concelho de Odemira.
A vila cresceu em popularidade e população e está localizada na foz do rio Mira, desenvolveu-se com o porto interior, e durante muitos séculos Milfontes até formou um porto exterior de Odemira.
Durante séculos esta pequena vila teve uma história emocionante devido aos perigos do mar. Foi este local estratégico que atraiu longos períodos de pirataria e bucaneiros.
Em 1590, ocorreu um poderoso ataque de piratas, que chegou a destruir a vila.

"Castelo" wird dieses Gebäude von den Einheimischen genannt, wurde Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts, um genau zu sein 1602 errichtet und diente zu jener Zeit zur Bekämpfung der Piraterie auf der See. Das "Castelo" war damals eines der wichtigsten und angesehensten Verteidungssystemen, das sowohl dazu diente, das Dorf Milfontes zu beschützen und zu verteidigen, als auch den Seehandel von Odemira zu bewahren, für den Milfontes mit der bekannten Flussmündung als Hafeneinfaht eine enorm wichtige Rolle spielte.

Diese alte Festung namens Sant Klemens aus dem XVIII. Jahrhundert in "Vila Nova de Milfontes" liegt direkt am Fluss Mira und wurde im Jahre 1998 umgebaut und renoviert. Nun ist diese in privater Hand und Touristen haben keinen öffentlichen Zugang zu ihr. Ich glaube gehört zu haben, dass man sich dort (wie in einem Hotel) einmieten kann, um seinen Urlaub in angemesser Unterkunft zu verbringen.

Luftfahrt

Das fast schon unscheinbare Dörfchen "Vila Nova de Milfontes" ist eng verknüpft mit der großen Leistung der portugiesischen Luftfahrt, wer hätte es gedacht oder? Denn die erste Luftüberfahrt zwischen Portugal und Macau wurde von Brito Paes und Sarmento Beires durchgeführt. Man schrieb den 7. April 1924, einen hoffentlich schönen Tag, als die Piloten aus dem "Campo dos Coitos" in der Nähe von Milfontes Richtung Orient aufbrachen.

Zur Erinnerung und Wertschätzung dieses Ereignisses und an die Piloten und ihre geschichtliche Glanzleistung, wurde auf dem Platz "Praça da Barbacã" neben der Festung St. Klemens ein Denkmal dazu errichtet, dass an die heroischen Reise stets erinnern soll. Beachtet man dabei und nimmt zur Kenntnis, dass der Commander Brito Paes auch im Landkreis Odemira zur Welt kam, genauer gesagt in Colos.

klein aber fein

"Villa Nova de Milfontes" ist meines Wissens nach die älteste und eventuell sogar die bekannteste Gemeinde im Kreis Odemira. Gegründet wurde diese durch ein königliches Dekret von König Johannes II. im Jahre 1486 und somit zum Landkreis erklärt. Durch eine Verwaltungsreform des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde diese Gemeinde an den Landkreis Odemira angeschlossen.

Das Dorf wuchs an Bekanntheit und Bevölkerung und liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Mira, es entwickelte sich mit dem Binnenhafen, und für viele Jahrhunderte bildeten Milfontes sogar einen Außenhafen von Odemira.

Schon seit Jahrhunderten hat diese kleine Stadt eine aufregende Geschichte wegen der Gefahren aus dem Meer hinter sich. Denn grad dieser strategische Ort lockte lange Piraterie und Freibeuter an.

Im Jahr 1590 erfolgte ein mächtiger Angriff von Piraten, welcher sogar das Dorf zerstörte.
