Why Do We Dream of Falling?

in #psychology6 years ago

You've probably dreamed of falling before, but did you know, these types of dreams can be related to stress?

It is relatively common to dream that you fall. It is said that at least 95% have had that dream at least once. These dreams are unpleasant and they make us scared and scared. But where are they coming?

Therefore, we fall in our dreams

It happens to you once in a while. You fall asleep and get caught in a dream where you suddenly fall into an abyss. The earth disappears below the feet, or you fall over the edge of a rock and experience the scary feeling of falling. Your heart galopses and you suddenly become very awake with anxiety in heart and mind. You even think you've fallen out of bed somehow, what some people actually do. What is the reason for this phenomenon?

1. It happens in the first stages of sleep.

If you remember these dreams, you will realize that they occur within minutes after falling asleep. At Sleep Lab at the hospital in Madrid, Spain, they have investigated this phenomenon and concluded that this is due to a small imbalance between the balance system (placed in the ears) and the kinesthetic system.

The body has not yet adapted to a lying position that forces us to wake up with the feeling that we are falling. This means that many people actually fall out of bed.

2. Stress is also an important factor.

Now try to remember your emotional state when you experienced this phenomenon. Dreaming where you fall is also associated with stress. We set our minds at a high level of activity. Cortisol accelerates core functions, and brain waves are at the maximum activity level. When we lie down, our bodies relax, but the mind remains active, much more than normal.

And then there is a new imbalance: an overactive brain in a relaxed body. This leads to a feeling of falling that translates into your dreams and surprises you so you wake up.

3. The phenomenon of sleep disorder

The feeling is very vibrant and intense, sometimes even scary, because of how true everything seems to be. When we dream that we fall, it's an unpleasant experience that makes us want to wake up before we hit the earth.

We will conclude this by saying that the main reason for this phenomenon is stress. The brain is oversized, leading to an imbalance between body and mind in the initial stages of sleep. The brain responds to this imbalance by producing anxiety-filled dreams. There is also the theory that dreaming of falling is a inherited instinct from our early human-like ancestors who slept in trees and suddenly woke up to avoid falling. Interesting, not?

hi tradewonk, I'm still trying to figure out this voting thing. I've read that when you vote for yourself in the first 30 minutes that you are taking away from the value of those who also vote for you. Is that true?

Interesting article on falling in your sleep. I'll share this with you- there is also the panic attack dream of being chased. I learned to stop that one, no more waking up in a cold sweat with heart racing - in my dream I would will myself to stop running and turn and face what was chasing me. There would be nothing there and the panic attack would pass.

And falling - I enjoy those moments when I dream of following because I will myself to take flight like Peter Pan :) The terror of falling ends and the joy of being able to fly and soar around the countryside takes over :)

:) Enjoy those dreams :)

I agree with that buddy! about the voting thing, honestly i don't really know about that.

I see, definiately i dont need to consult my pastor all the time? @tradewonk thanks for the eye opener.

No problem buddy!

good topic

I tried that just the other and it's true I was stressed out. Also tried sleeping while sitting and just threw the mouse because I dreamt that i was falling..
