Part 2: Unlocking The Secret In False Belief.

in #psychology6 years ago

Hi Folks,

In some days back, I shared a reasoning on False Believe which i mentioned on my closure that We do not always believe things because they are correct, we only believe just that this will present us good to people we love and care about. A false beliefs can be useful in a social sense even if they are not useful in a factual sense. Sometimes we called it factually false but socially accurate. When in come to choose between the two, majority of people do choose friends and family over facts.

False Belief Part 1samest

This above notion create reason why we might hold our tongue at a dinner party or look the other way when our parents say something offensive, but also reveals a better way to change the minds of others.
Believe this today, fact don’t change mind, only friendship does.

Peace Of Mind Edited by samest

When you convince a person to change his mind is like a process of telling him to change his tribe. The logic is, whenever they abandon their beliefs, it simply means they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too. You have to give them somewhere to go. No one wants their worldview torn apart if loneliness is the outcome. Changing people’s minds comes with friendship. You need to derive a means of becoming a friends with them, integrate in them your tribe, and bring them into your circle. Hence, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

I came to understanding of one thing, when proximity increases, so does understanding.

I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better. Abraham Lincoln

Lets look at Spectrum of Beliefs

I read of an idea from Ben Casnocha, The people who are most likely to change our minds are the ones we agree with on 98 percent of topics

Spectrum of Belief Edited by samest

There is what i discovered, you have a friend that you so love and he belief a radial idea, you are likely in the position to give it merit and consider that idea also due to the fact of the belief and love you have for your friend. On the other hand, you will easily dismiss a person if the person is wildly different than you and hes proposing an outlandish idea.

There are ways to visualize this above belief, which is by mapping beliefs on a spectrum. Let me say you divide spectrum into 15 units and you as a person find yourself in 10 position, in logical sense you have to use little sense why trying to convince someome in position 1, because the gap is too wide. When you are still at that position 10, your time usage will be better if you connect with people in position 9 and 11 and by this you will gradually pull them to your direction.

Just like how friction of movement works, heated arguments occur between people on opposite ends of the spectrum, but the major learning begins from people who are very closeby to you.

Folks, one or two beliefs you dont share has effect on your closeness to someone, it will bleed over into your own mind and thereby shape your thinking. Again there is every likelihood of rejecting an idea outright if your position is very far away.

Mind Spectrum Law states that, changing peoples minds is not an easy task to jumo from one belief to another, you have to slide it doen and not jump down the spectrum.

If you have an idea that is sufficiently different from your present understanding, this will feel threatening but the best area to ponder a threatening idea is in an environment that is non-threatening. The best way to transform beliefs is via writing(book). No need for debates or conversation.

In conversation majority of us consider our status and appearance. We want to save face and avoid looking stupid. So, when confronted with an uncomfortable set of facts, the tendency is to double down on our current position rather than publicly admit to being wrong. A book will resolve this threat and tension. Its inside someone’s head and without a risk of i will be judged by others a book communicate. In submission its very easier to be clear with open mind when you are not feeling defensive.

Why Does False Ideas Persist?

A bad ideas will continue to live on, i mean people will continue to talk about it because of a reason.

See, my friend! An idea is dead if you keep your mouth shoot. If an idea never spoken or pen down its dies with the person who conceived it. We can only remember an idea when its been repeated and its can only be believed when its been repeated.

Why Bad Idea Still Exist Edited by samest

Hear this!

People repeat ideas in order to signal they are part of the same social group, but there is one crucial point we miss out;

People always repeat bad ideas when you complain about such. Dont criticize an idea if you have not reference it. If you do, you will end up repeating the ideas youre hoping people will forget them because you keep talking about them. When you repeat bad idea, you give room for more people to copy and believe it. This is called Clear’s Law of Recurrence: The number of people who believe an idea is directly proportional to the number of times it has been repeated during the last year—even if the idea is false.

I need to say this also, whenever you attack a bad idea, is like you are feeding the very monster you think you are destroying. Friends, while not spend your time in championing good ideas than tearing down bad ones. Are you wasting time explaining why bad ideas are bad? Is more or less like you are fanning the flame of ignorance and stupidity.

@samest you are going too far. Oh really?

See, the best way on this matter is, forget bad idea and share the good one. possi little time as much as possible talking about how other people are wrong, focus more on how you can establish good and better idea.

Hey! wake up and feed the good ideas, let the bad ideas die of starvation.

Are you saying to yourself, @samest, are you out of your mind? You mean I suppose let these idiots get away with this?

With clear mind i will saying its never useful to point out an error or go against a bad idea. But you need to ask this question, What is the goal?

why do you go against a bad idea in the first place? Maybe you think the world would be a better place if fewer people believe them. Again, you believe the world would improve if many people changed their minds on some bad and few important topics.

That sound cool by me, because this is tailored towards changing minds, but never criticize the other side, use the best approach.

Many of us argue to win and not to learn. Dont act like soldiers but act like scouts. The difference between both is, soldiers are on intellectual attack, looking for victory at all time. They follow thise that differ them. But scouts are like intellectual explorers they operate slowly and map the terrain with others. It is shown that curiosity is the driving force.

Do you want people to adopt your beliefs, act like scouts and lesa like a soldier. Friends, are you ready to not win in other to keep the conversation going?

Be kind First, Be Right Later.

Whem you argue and you in, it means you have broken down the reality of the person you arging against, and you will agree with me its a painful thing to lose your realiaty, so be kind, even if you are right.

Most time we forget that our goal when we sighted bad idea, is to connect with other side, collaborate with them, be friend them and try as much as possible to integrate them into our tribe. We on our side so much caught up in winning and we forget about connecting.

From the meaning of kind which originated from kin i know that to be kind its simply means yoh are treating someone like hes part of your family. I always think of this, and this is a good method for actually change someone’s mind.

Let me end this again by saying, Be Kind First, Be Right Later

One Love

Yours Sincerely,.
