Internal critic.

Internal critic.

An internal critic is the same nasty voice in your head that tells you that this is what you did wrong, or that your life is a complete failure, or any of the endless variations on this subject that he can only come up with. This guy is very dangerous, because he is best suited for running a sympathetic nervous system and thus hinder our attempts to do anything.

A good way to find out if such a critic is inside you is to pay attention to how often the word "should" in your head sounds. "I should have left earlier" or, perhaps, "I had to study every day." An internal critic forces you, as they say, "to be everywhere and constantly to oneself due".

Since internal attacks are perceived by our brain in much the same way as real, physical attacks, they can trigger an automatic physical reaction - a reaction to the threat of "hit or run."

Professional basketball players and football players often mock the rivals to make them doubt their abilities. Michael Jordan was famous for that. Unfortunately, many of us make fun of themselves. We criticize ourselves, question our capabilities and launch a reaction to the threat. And this can negatively affect our ability to act.

As Dr. Philip Goldin says, "when people do not go to work because of illness, their lack of productivity is obvious. But a more insidious hindrance of productivity arises when people during a working day devour negative thoughts. Internal self-criticism can seriously limit innovation and creativity. " People can physically be present at the workplace, but they literally get stuck in a duel with their inner critic, losing the ability to move forward. And since such a mental absence is outwardly invisible, no one does anything with it.

Self-criticism is one of the most common obstacles for successful work in any field. We consider self-criticism and doubts in our abilities as silent business killers. Many top managers suffer from this, but few people dare to talk about it.

Over the years, we have spent most of the day in a battle with the negative, an army of internal critics who insistently point to disappointments, foretelling the setbacks that beat the drums of despair. In some cases, we are extremely surprised that we can achieve anything at all. One top manager said that he spends 80% of his working time fighting internal critic.

"The fear of being in a foolish position or being the object of someone's judgments is the reverse side of our social consciousness"

People know that self-doubt and self-criticism do not help them, but they can not help it. The vicious circle can be broken by understanding the meaning of these reactions ("My body reacts because it tries to protect me") or sympathy for oneself ("Of course, I react so, it's scary").

Thus, the internal critic prevents breakthroughs.

Your brain with negative negatives built into it begins to imagine possible failures. You immediately imagine the reaction of others to your failure. You have a growing sense of shame and fear. You want to be silenced, run away, hide and certainly do not conduct this experiment in real life.

But what is really happening? What you are experiencing is your inner discomfort, generated by the verdict of an internal critic about the opinions of others. But there is also a positive moment - everything just described happens exclusively in your head.

To free up your potential to make breakthroughs, you need to curb the internal critic. Unfortunately, our first reflex action when it is activated is to try to argue with it.

You need to learn to dance with your shadow; learn to curb your inner critic.

Good article. Being plauged with self doubt and also being extremely self critical, one realizes that the inner critic can lead you to a paralysis of action. Although, it is under control I have yet to learn to dance with my shadow.

Awesome post!
In improv theatre, we call this the voice from the head - that nagging, self-doubting voice that won't let you be yourself. Actually, a lot of the games used in improvisation focus on acting without thinking, thus tricking the internal critic by not giving it time to say something nasty.
Anyhow, it's very important to keep a positive frame of mind and know that we can do things. That way, we actually can do them.
