Why not both? You ask.

You definitely can. But it's gonna take a while.

In the beginning stages of your life, focus on being rich rather than sexy.

Sexy or Rich?

Being sexy is being seen as the high earner. The one who with the Ray Ban sunglasses and driving the BMW by 28.

You know, the guy who rose through the ranks, highly ambitious and became manager by 25 and VP by 28.

He is living the life. He travels too. He is sexy.

Who doesn't want that right?

But if you focus on that in beginning... You are making a huge mistake.

The big mistake we make about earning high salaries

There's this line I always remind myself - it doesn't matter how much you make, it matters how much you keep.

The retail worker making RM2,000 a month maybe a loser in society's eyes compared to the RM7,000 a month manager.

But if the retail worker has the habits of only spending RM1000 a month and the high flying manager saves nil every month, the retail worker wins in the long run.

You may say the manager can always cut back, but old habits and new financial commitments can be difficult to quit.

Not convinced? Think about this way.

Why your present money situation is most important

I once met a guy who used to be a high roller. He drove a Porsche in his 20s and was making bank in the 80s. He even crashed the car once!

But looking at him today you couldn't tell. He has little to no money and lives paycheck-to-paycheck. Where did the money go? His lifestyle, of course. His lifestyle for that particular month.

It doesn't matter what happened in the 80s - what matters is right now. If he kept just a portion of the money, he could still be living the dream today. But that's long gone.

What's your financial situation right now?

If you are making RM7000 and still save zero each month, you're worse off than the government school teachers who save RM1000+ a month.

As for the definition of rich, I guess you can tell what it means by now. It means having cash in the bank and being smart with your money.

We all think we are smart enough not to fall for the "Keeping Up with the Joneses" traps but the truth is we all are doing a version of it -- our own version, without realizing it.

Snap out of it and start learning how to do conscious spending (Google that).

Call to Action

Start putting away 10% of your paycheck into a separate account. Automate it if you can, place a standing instruction.

It doesn't matter if you're making RM2,000 or RM10,000, move the f**king money.

View it as a special tax for your future self. The old self. The 70 year old version of you. Because one day in the future, you will glad you did.
