Proposal: Screeps Blockchain-backed MMO-RTS

in #proposal6 years ago (edited)

About Screeps

Screeps is an Open Source MMO-RTS available on Steam (not Steem LOL). What really makes it unique (besides being hackable) is that all moves are conducted as Javascript code. It's an MMO-RTS intended for programmers. You either have to be a programmer to play it already, or you have to learn in order to play it. Relax, the beginners are more than capable to compete. Being a better programmer, doesn't necessarily make you a better player (it probably helps, but just a little). What matters is that you code javascript and that's how the game progresses.

Here's a video of some gameplay

The Proposal

There are a number of blockchain games available, but I think this would be the first MMORTS. It currently doesn't interact with the blockchain at all, but it is possible to run custom server with modifications that do interact with the blockchain.

The modification is basically to monitor gameplay progress through a steemit blog post.

The Blog Post

The blog post is initiated by the start of the game. The blog post refuses payout, but can be upvoted.

As significant goals are achieved in the middle of the game, comments from the game will be made to the post. The game moderator as set as a 15% beneficiary on the comments.

Mass-Multiplayer

It would be possible to interact with other steem users in game. Interactions can be recorded as comments or as votes in game.

Scoring

Scoring is how steem users can make money from the effort of playing a game. As players complete milestones, comments are made on the original game post. Comments can receive votes. Votes are made by other stakeholders to increase the value of the comment proportionate to the score at the time of the milestone.

Bonuses

Bonus points can be awarded by achieving reward goals.

Downvoting/Flagging

Downvoting and flagging will be allowed. Votes are given according to score, but this does not guarantee a payout according to score.

A New Age for Bots

Sort:

I've thought a lot about games like this on Steem. I think there is a massive opportunity! The majority of users probably aren't able to think outside of blog/comment model but one you can it opens up all sorts of ideas.

Yeah, blog comments are tough to get away from because they are exactly like posts, but follow the many-children-one-parent model. Since they're just like posts, you get to add all sorts of really cool metadata that doesn't show up in the comment body. You can use the body for things that make it more readable.

I used to play an MMORPG, and at the end of every day, a digest went out to the players about what happened in the game the day before. Rather than being a play-by-play, it read like a novella. I would really like to do something like that, so each comment is meaningful content and readable.

I used to make text based mmorpgs with microtransactions. I would love to do something like that again but somehow incorporate steem into it. But I haven't thought how I could go about it yet. Maybe one day. I wouldn't want it to be spammy.

Though transactions on steem blockchain are pretty fast compared to other blockchains it is still slow. So as long as we use the Steem blockchain to store only relevant data and for the distribution of rewards, I think it will be a good idea.
