Balancing Between Work And Personal Life

in Project HOPE3 years ago

In this era, a lot of people have sacrificed their personal life for their work and vice verse, without realizing that all these will come at a cost. When you give too little of what you are expected to give adequate, it becomes a major challenge. Imagine someone putting their entire soul into their work and abandoning the very reason they are actually working - their family and personal life. This is why you have to strike a balance between your work and your personal life, so as to get the full benefits of both without sacrificing one for another.

In the society we found ourselves in, a lot of pressures are coming from a lot of places and it seems like all these places are craving for your attention and all. I remember when a friend of mine got his internship in one of the banks in the country, it costed him his social life. At that point, he was new into his relationship, having been single for a while, so he normally called the girlfriend as many times as possible within the day, so it was like a pattern until he started his internship. His branch manager was so strict that he will not want the operation staff to use mobile phones while at the work time.

So during the day, he will not call to check up on the girlfriend like he normally did and she did not seem to understand even with the explanation. The internship was to last for 1 year but in less than 6 months, the girlfriend already left him and he went back to being single. If only he figured out a way to balance work with his relationship, it may not have been the story, who knows? As you grow and get mature, you inherit a lot of responsibilities, which you are expected to shoulder. Now one may ask, with all the pressures from work, family, friends, social life, etc, how do you balance up everything?

Firstly, you have to learn the power of priority. You have to know which part of your life that needs to come first in the scale of preference and this is also with recourse to timing. For example; at every time of the day, you should know what you are supposed to channel your attention to. After the working hours, you do not have to carry over your work to your house to continue from where you stopped, you should know that it is your personal time and not work time. Once you are done with work for the day, leave it as so, and continue the next day at work. The truth is that even if you kill yourself for your work, they will still not miss you for long and you will be perfectly replaced. So take note.

The next thing you have to do is to learn to set realistic and achievable goals within a realistic time frame. There is no point in trying to "put all your fingers in your mouth at the same time." You have to map out your plans and strategies and then take them one after the other. Most times, when you try to pursue so many things at the same time, you will end up putting yourself into unnecessary pressure and may not even achieve that much. There is nothing as discouraging as undertaking an obviously impossible task within an unachievable time frame. Give yourself a realistic target and see how you will balance up things effectively.

Another point to consider in balancing up work and personal life is to know when to say yes and no (especially the no). When something is about to encroach into the balance of your work and personal life, you reserve the right to say no. Always know that there is a limit in your work and in your personal life. For example; a colleague trying to engage you to finish their own task so that they can go for their own personal business while they want you to sacrifice your own. At that point, you will be right to say no and maintain it.

Always have in mind that every aspect of your life will always seek for maximum attention from you, but the responsibility is now rested on you to determine how you are to allocate time to each of them, so as to strike a balance.

Striking at a balance is usually the goal. But when you're ambitious, it's really hard to. That's why most rich people don't have work life balance - it's usually more work. Thanks for posting.

Nice comment. Thanks a lot for coming around buddy @devotedman.
