Corruption in Underdeveloped and Developing Countries

in Project HOPE5 years ago

I came to an understanding that in so many Underdeveloped and developing countries, leadership isn't synonymous to politics as when power hasn't been wielded, sanity often remain but when they get this absolute power, they tend to forget they have followers they have to lead, they start to see Chess Pawns and money making offices.

Politics has been seen as a position to steal and get wealthy in third world and developing countries not because the system is corrupt but because the people in it are. When the people in a system are bad, no matter ho good the system may look, it will only produce bad result. I will be looking at a few reasons why corruption won't die easily in these countries and why these countries will keep suffering.

Taking a look at counties like Lebanon, Venezuela, Somalia, Somalia, Nigeria and so on, the major reason for their lack of growth is corruption. Corruption started one day out of greed and this greed grew into holding power for as long as possible. Because democracy will not allow for a person to seat in power for a very long time, they start to put in their offspring, family members, loyalist and friends whom they know will remain loyal to the course of stealing from public funds but since democracy is king, they have to find a way to make their plans work.

The politician needs to get his loyalist in power in the next election so the corrupt practices will continue at the expense of the economic stand and at the expense of the peoples' standard of living, so the "let them smile a little" trick is played. The aim is to make the people a little happy while making themselves as a politician happier and the people demand good roads, electricity, education, water and other basic amenities nut not including food so the first thing is get a corrupt friend with a construction company and award a contract on paper in Billions of the currency to construct/repair a road.

The contract is signed and the money in reality is shared among the parties involved that got helped the individual win the project while the rest goes to the person who won the project. The person is advised not to do a good job so he can be called upon before the next election to do the road again and get his share of the national cake. The contractor goes and do inferior jobs with half the money given to him and the people are happy that their government remembered them. Other projects will also continue making money for both the people in power and the contractors.

The election is getting closer, and the people have been ripped on all levels including not providing job opportunity for them so they are hungry. At this point, the next step is to make them sell their vote. First you need to mane them loyal to the party where the flag bearer for the election is going to be produced so they do not contest whatever candidate is given to them, then you make them work to make the election possible. After this, it becomes a case of sell your vote for money else we will steal the vote by force. After this, a new person gets in power and the circle begins again with the corrupt politicians making policies and amending constitutions just to favor their selfish and greedy acts.

Will Corruption Ever End in This Countries?

Sort:

Corruption has really go a long way in preventing some country to achieve their high potential and increase their living standard in that country. Though we all blame it at the politician at times but also when those citizens get to the political post, they chose to get corrupted or involve in corruption just as the other politicians also which is quite pathetic

Corrupt politicians need ignorant and low moral people, in that sense Venezuela is the best example of politicians that do not let the citizen prosper but everything reaches a limit where the creators of the corruption system cannot enjoy what they stole because of the violence that they themselves have created in the country, Latin America has seen many dictators fall and in Venezuela that history will repeat itself.

Even Democracy has a loophole that allows this greedy, corrupt and selfish politicians to stay safe. When corruption reaches its peak in a country, people who have embezzled the countries wealth won't stay in the country anymore as the country won't be conducive for them anymore.

corruption is really a scourge in underdeveloped and developing countries. As you say, by people whose greed corrupts the system, and then makes others enter the wheel that does not stop turning, the contractor accepts the job because he must work and it is institutionalized that he must pay the official who awarded him the job, and so the people are cheated with a poor quality work that only serves for the politician to take pictures at the inauguration of the work.

Hi @gbenga
Unfortunately, for this to end, there must be a cleansing of the political figures who reflect and execute corruption, something unlikely in countries such as Venezuela.
The experience lived in my country has been a lesson for a large majority of the population, but in emerging countries, a large percentage of the low-income population sells out and favors corruption as an easy way to obtain wealth, without caring about their country.
Great read.
Best regards.

Hello friend, I agree, the problem is the people, that is where we must attack, eliminate or eradicate the problem from the source. In my country the government is useless, Venezuela was always a great country and everyone wanted to know it, today with its rulers what it gives is pity and no one wants Venezuelans. It is sad for me to see the situation we are going through, but fortunately we are warriors and we can do anything, we will go ahead!

Humans are just filled with greed, and in so many countries the government seem to exist only for themselves enriching themselves and their offspring. I really understand the situation of Venezuela, the one rich country with good GDP to a country facing multiple recession and lots of debt.

Corruption cannot be taken away whether it is developed or underdeveloped country. We can see corruption every were , all need good money for life.

Corruption is everywhere but reduced in the developed countries compared to developing and underdeveloped countries. At least the basic needs of the citizens are attended to with tax payers money in developed countries unlike in underdeveloped and developing countries where corruption rules.
