Time and Sleep Deprivation

in #productivity5 years ago

Resonating with my previous post yesterday, today I will share my thoughts on time management. I personally write about time a lot because it's very fascinating object to observe. However, I haven't read many publications to comprehend fully about the concept of time. I write this based on fast food information and my personal experience with time management.

Earlier this year, I set a schedule for my personal life. It turns out that this month, I fail to follow the plan accordingly. I think there is a part of me that was wrong in approaching the schedule planning. In this case, my mistake was getting more work done than balancing it with personal life.

I decided to put more hours for work and less time for my life. I put 11 hours work time, 4 hours dealing with life, 6 hours or less sleeping, the rest is spent on light activities such as journaling or meditating. It was not a balanced situation, especially after I read several sources that mention, we need to sleep 8 hours a day. For me personally, that's ridiculous amount to waste just to sleep.

However, having to know the impact of sleep deprivation after reading a paper from Fucci et al.1 about the impact of sleep deprivation on novice developers has convinced me that proper 8 hours of sleep is important.

Hence, below is the amount that I find fairly reasonable for scheduling our day :

  • Sleep : 8 hours

  • Work : 9 hours

  • Exercise :1 hour

  • Life : 6 hours

Since we can't tweak our sleeping hours, let's imagine we only have 16 hours left for our time credit. Let's say we can work less, more activities for our life or work more less activities relating to life. In addition, I think working time depends from one person to another. However, bear in mind that even if you're an entrepreneur and love hustling, don't forget sleeping. This because according to a publication on cost of poor sleep,it is estimated that 63 billion USD lost every year due the lack of sleep of its workforce in American economy.2 When you think about it, that's counter productive to something we're trying to achieve. We want to get the work done, getting more profit while keeping ourselves sane and intact.

In conclusion, it is easy to fall into the pit of sleep deprivation. It's also easy to listen to hustler guru who said they work 16 hours a day, yet it might not be the right fit for you. Hence, if you notice a declining in your performance at work or school, check your sleeping habit.

Sleep and rest is very important. There's an old Chinese saying "休息是为了走更长远的路" which means " Rest is essential so that we can go further in life".

Whoa! that's a new saying I learn today. I think despite the glorification of staying awake, there's a time for us to sleep. Perhaps those people like Elon musk, who is known for outworking everyone else in the planet, they sleep too. They just sacrifice their time for other things. Because like I laid out in the post, we actually have 5 hours more for life activiest, that's something that I assume entrepreneurs or business person sacrifice.

@macchiata Truly agree. When manage the time well actually thats also manage your age life well. Very well topic article we need to read from time to time as reminder.

Agreed as well! reading is good for the brain. They say, food for thoughts.

Worth reading. I totally agree with you, spending time on working than personal life and rest is counterproductive.

Exactly! I think it's something we fail to understand these days. Often, we wait until out health declining or work performance declining due sleep deprivation.
