When I saw the picture for the first time, I thought about this verse, although I realise the bird is not a sparrow. And then afterwards I thought of this history about the verse. So here it goes:

During the Anglo-Boer War (South African war) of 1899-1902, the English were struggling to defeat the Boers. The English started to demoralise the Boers by rounding up the woman and children living on the farms, burnt the farms to the ground, and put the women in concentration camps.

In one of this Camps, in Bethulie, also known as the camp of hell, 1734 woman and children died in the most terrible conditions. In each camp, the woman chose a verse from the bible to encourage each other to not give up. The theme for the Bethulie camp was
Matthew 10:29-31
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
After the ugly war, the women asked General Jan Smuts, the prime minister then, to put the emblem of the sparrow onto the lowest coin, to thank God they had survived the war and to remind the men and women of South Africa of their true worth in God’s eyes.
