The New Workforce at BMW's Factories




Humanoid robots are definitively leaving the labs to take on real-world roles in the world’s largest factories. BMW took another step forward in this transformation by expanding its partnership with Figure AI and announcing the integration of the new-generation Figure 3 robot into its U.S. operations.


Equipped with artificial intelligence, advanced computer vision, and a set of sensors distributed throughout its body, this android was designed to perform logistics tasks continuously alongside human workers. The collaboration between BMW and Figure began with a pilot project using the Figure 2 at the Spatenberg plant in South Carolina. For approximately 10 months, the robot participated in activities related to supplying welding cells and moving components used in the manufacture of the BMW X3.


The positive results spurred a new phase of the project, as the focus has now shifted from production to internal logistics—one of the most critical areas of any modern factory, where delays of just a few minutes can disrupt the entire assembly line. Figure 3 was developed specifically to operate in this dynamic environment. Its hands incorporate high-precision tactile sensors and cameras integrated into Las Palmas, allowing it to identify objects, confirm their position, and automatically adjust the force applied during handling.




The exterior structure was fitted with soft coatings to reduce risks during collaborative work with human operators, while the induction charging system eliminates the need to manually connect cables, increasing the time available for continuous operation, but the hardware is only part of the innovation. Even before a robot goes into operation, its entire routine is digitally simulated using the BMW I Factory platform. In this virtual environment, engineers test trajectories, identify bottle patterns and logistics, and adjust movements to reduce unnecessary travel.


At the same time, artificial intelligence-based systems continuously monitor the ergonomics of tasks, directing humanoids toward repetitive and physically demanding activities, while automated inspection platforms monitor production quality in real time. BMW’s breakthrough shows that the next industrial revolution may not be marked solely by faster assembly lines, but by silicon-based workers capable of learning, seeing, manipulating objects, and collaborating directly with people.


The era of physical intelligence has already begun, and the factories of the future will be defined less and less by stationary machines and more and more by humanoid robots that adapt to their environment in real time.
