The first modular robot

The Chinese company Direct Drivetech has just launched the D1, which promises to mark a new era in modern robotics. Billed as the first fully modular robo that makes use of built-in intelligence, D1 is capable of automatically assembling and disassembling as needed.

An innovation that combines strength, flexibility and autonomy in a single system. The structure of the D1 is based on a networked system co-architecture designed for what the company calls swarm collaboration, that is, multiple robots working together in a coordinated manner, exchanging data and reacting in real time to the environment.

This approach makes it ideal for complex operations that require rapid adaptation, such as external inspections, material transportation, and autonomous services. The big difference of the D1 is in its technology called All Domain Splicing, this capability allows the robot to be physically reconfigured in multiple combinations to create different modes of locomotion.

When assembled, the D1 offers extreme stability and a load capacity of up to 100 kg in four-wheeled travel mode, in addition to 80 kg in stationary mode, when separated, each module gains individual mobility and range, allowing parallel missions and greater operational versatility.

The performance is also impressive, D1 reaches more than 25 km of range with minimum load and an autonomy of more than 5 hours, in two-wheeled mode, outstanding figures for modular robots in this category. This energy efficiency reduces the need for constant recharging and expands its use in long-term and difficult-to-access environments, combining artificial intelligence, modular design and collaborative architecture.

The D1 is not just a robot, it is an intelligent movement platform capable of adapting to different contexts and working in conjunction with other robotic systems. Direct Drivetech is betting that its creation will be a watershed in the search for universal embodied intelligence, a concept that seeks to bring machines closer to the human capacity for physical and cognitive adaptation.
