Every year, hundreds of millions of mobiles are obsolete in the world due to the rapid technological evolution and anxiety of the average citizen to change their device, the middle life cycle of a smartphone in the main economies rarely exceeds two years. And the data are increasing since, according to recent data, in January 2025 there were 7,420 million smartphones in global use, this is 1.5 billion more than five years ago, which represents a growth of about 300 million new devices per year.

Cada año, cientos de millones de móviles quedan obsoletos en el mundo debido a la rápida evolución tecnológica y a la ansiedad del ciudadano medio por cambiar su dispositivo, el ciclo de vida medio de un smartphone en las principales economías rara vez supera los dos años. Y los datos van en aumento ya que según datos recientes, en enero de 2025 había 7.420 millones de smartphones en uso a nivel global, esto son 1.500 millones más que hace cinco años, lo que representa un crecimiento de unos 300 millones de dispositivos nuevos por año.

All these obsolete mobiles can be reused, donated, sold or recycled, but unfortunately only a small part is recycled correctly. But now it seems that there is a new initiative that could give them a new use instead of having them lying through the drawers of our house or stacked in third world landfills. Recently a group of researchers from the University of Tartu, in Estonia, have developed a method to reuse old smartphones and turn them into functional data micro-centers, with a reconditioning cost of only 8 euros per device.

Todos estos móviles obsoletos pueden ser reutilizados, donados, vendidos o reciclados, pero lamentablemente solo una pequeña parte se recicla correctamente. Pero ahora parece que existe una nueva iniciativa que podría darles un nuevo uso en lugar de tenerlos tirados por los cajones de nuestra casa o apilados en vertederos del tercer mundo. Recientemente un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Tartu, en Estonia, han desarrollado un método para reutilizar smartphones antiguos y convertirlos en micro-centros de datos funcionales, con un coste de reacondicionamiento de solo 8 euros por dispositivo.

To achieve this, the first thing is to remove the internal battery from the phone to avoid environmental risks and prolong the useful life of the hardware. The phones are connected to an external and stable energy source, which allows its continuous operation without depending on degraded batteries and preventing chemical leaks and safety problems associated with old batteries. Subsequently, several phones are grouped in a 3D printed housing and connected by custom circuits that regulate energy and allow communication between them.

Para conseguirlo lo primero es retirar la batería interna del teléfono para evitar riesgos ambientales y prolongar la vida útil del hardware. Los teléfonos se conectan a una fuente de energía externa y estable, lo que permite su funcionamiento continuo sin depender de baterías degradadas y previniendo fugas químicas y problemas de seguridad asociados a baterías viejas. Posteriormente se agrupan varios teléfonos en una carcasa impresa en 3D y conectados mediante circuitos personalizados que regulan la energía y permiten la comunicación entre ellos.

Finally, personalized software that allows mobile phones to collaborate as processing and storage nodes, sharing tasks and functioning as a small distributed data center would. The cost of preparing each phone is around 8 euros without counting the residual value of the phone since they are supposed to be disused. This money is mainly spent on the power supply and the physical integration of the phones to the system as a whole.

Finalmente se instala un software personalizado que permita a los teléfonos móviles colaborar como nodos de procesamiento y almacenamiento, compartiendo tareas y funcionando como lo haría un pequeño centro de datos distribuido. El coste de preparar cada teléfono ronda los 8 euros sin contar el valor residual del teléfono ya que se supone que están en desuso. Este dinero se gasta principalmente en la fuente de alimentación y la integración física de los teléfonos al conjunto del sistema.

This type of cheap data centers can be used in tasks such as real time monitoring of passenger flow in bus stops, optimizing urban transport routes and services. In environmental monitoring to account and study species automatically, without direct human intervention. Or real -time data processing and storage where cloud connectivity is limited, such as agriculture, air quality or meteorology, to mention some applications.

Este tipo de centros de datos baratos pueden utilizarse en tareas como monitorización en tiempo real del flujo de pasajeros en paradas de autobús, optimizando rutas y servicios del transporte urbano. En el monitoreo ambiental para contabilizar y estudiar especies automáticamente, sin intervención humana directa. O el Procesamiento y almacenamiento de datos en tiempo real donde la conectividad a la nube es limitada, como en agricultura, calidad del aire o meteorología, por mencionar algunas aplicaciones.
