Meandering Thoughts on the Dangers of Revolution and the Path to Real Change

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

There are many aspects of the political and economic status quo in our world that are patently unjust. Further, the real injustices are often misidentified, resulting in new injustices committed by well-meaning activists to "fix" them.

Consider the historical example of the French Revolution. There were real problems with a monarchy and aristocracy built on plundering the populace. Taxation, regulation, an inherently unjust justice system, misguided wars, and more were real burdens. However, the response resulted in new injustice while corrupt men sought political power over their fellows, pursued petty vengeance against their rivals, and slaughtered anyone who had the misfortune to be fingered as an "enemy of the people."

This same chaos has resulted from most political revolutions, sometimes stabilizing over time, but usually either burning out as a new round of revolution topples the previous revolutionary regime, or else stagnating into a new totalitarian government that commits the same crimes as the regime that inspired revolt in the first place, only with the rebellious now either dead or contentedly wielding the power they previously protested.

Now, as in the past, the general public is poorly educated in matters of liberal philosophy. Revolutionary movements are largely populated by uneducated masses, or worse still, miseducated masses. There is nothing more dangerous than an expert in things that are wrong who is also willing to murder those who dispute his position.

None of this is to advise supporting the status quo, either passively or by participation in an effort to "change it from within." Government is fundamentally an organized crime racket. It is utterly irredeemable. But taking over this system changes nothing fundamental. We must build alternatives.

Steemit is one such alternative. We have a monetary system and a communication system. It does not need to be used for revolutionary purposes. it is revolutionary. Perhaps it will shoot "to the moon," or perhaps it will fade away as innovators build better alternatives.

Any alternative currency used in the grey and black markets is likewise revolutionary. Building a thriving economy outside the purview of politicians is constructive activism. Gold, silver, bitcoin, and the various altcoins are all far more useful than molotov cocktails and street riots. We need to show that society thrives in the absence of the State, and these tools help us break the chains of traditional beliefs.

Beware the urge to respond to injustice by treating others as nobodies. If you feel the need to act in response to The State, consider Ben Stone's guide to sedition, subversion and sabotage, and make sure your actions are ethical and rational rather than going off half-cocked.

We can build a better tomorrow, but our methods must fit our intended ends. The tools of tyrants can only build tyranny. The alt-right is wrong. The social justice warriors are wrong. Beware of them, and anyone else who similarly demands power while collectively condemning some "other" as a scapegoat.
