There are two main factions in the Australian Liberal Party, the left and the right. They are nearly equally divided and this makes for a lot of arguments within the party. Malcom Turnbull, the left faction sitting prime minister was challenged early in the week by Peter Dutton from the right faction. Turnbull called the spill in a hope to reinforce his position after rumblings in the party room. Turnbull won the vote but realised that this was just the beginning.
Turnbull tried to discredit Dutton and used all sorts of delaying tactics that had not been seen in parliament before, eventually to no avail. Turnbull threatened to resign if a new spill was voted for, possibly causing the loss of the governments one vote majority.

On Friday after last minute delaying tactics three contenders were voted on.

Scott Morrison - left faction - who could be seen as Turnbull's sputnik.
Julie Bishop - left faction - deputy PM - always the bridesmaid never the bride.
Peter Dutton - right faction - holds only a slim majority in his seat.

The first vote eliminated Julie Bishop who promptly resigned in a hissy-fit.
The second vote eliminated Peter Dutton making Scott Morrison PM elect.

This leaves Turnbull and Bishop on the Backbench ready to resign from parliament at any time causing a general election.
