Austrian President condemns US policy against Iran: No one in Europe wants another Iraq
The ruthless US press campaign against Tehran and the people trading with it is deeply provocative and damaging to international relations, said Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and warned of a major "crisis". Van der Bellen spoke at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, condemning US sanctions against Iran and saying that such a policy "does not help international relations" and merely undermines the system of global treaties.
"The fact that the US has withdrawn from Iran's nuclear agreement undermines confidence in this agreement in general," he told reporters. "It is particularly provocative that the United States has again imposed sanctions against Iran after withdrawing from the agreement and threatening to punish companies that continue to cooperate with Tehran." The Austrian leader has also admitted that Europe has so far failed to "devise a mechanism to help companies effectively circumvent" US restrictions. He also said that creating such a tool is a "very laborious" task.
