Dawn breaks through midnight sky
Green with greed
or tornadoes
What might we be without it?
Strangers to everything
but flame and fatality
The hive drawing us together
same-
but too close to the forest
To see anything but trees
How long until we can't move upstream from the contamination?
The plume engulfing
all we don't know
and are indifferent to-

There's no way to unlearn humanity
animals are light sleepers
spared of the nightmare
that is self-awareness.
Simple lives and simple loves.
Summer hearts and
pure/r/ring
souls

I initially wrote this piece during college, in class, when I was probably supposed to be taking notes. We were working on research projects for a geology class, where I discovered the plume of pollution that spreads through a body of water. This may have been where I started using language from scientific journals to inspire lines/phrases within my poetry (I did something similar in my piece "Head/waters"). The second stanza was inspired by my kitten, and was initially a separate poem. I'll often jot down lines or basic inspiration and then use it in poems further down the line, when the muse strikes me. While my poetry is never particularly joyful, this is an especially dark piece, with a negative outlook on the future and humanity's place in it.
