A Better Life…
They came in broad daylight
the dark of the night
traveling countless miles
eyes burning bright
they come in all sizes
races and types
many who are good
some not so nice
fleeing oppression or
disastrous war
famines and poverty
they can no longer to ignore
braving the elements
the long trek ahead
forsaking their homeland
their very own bed
some deal with smugglers
risk their own lives
before crossing any borders
many won't survive
seeking opportunity
something not as bad
education for their children
the chance they never had
proud to work jobs
many won't take
exploited by employers
face untold heartache
chasing a dream
they have in their head
leaving their families
the countries they fled
learning the language
trying to fit in
swearing an oath
is how they'll begin
after such an ordeal
the countless strife
all they really want is
…a better life.
