One Wrong Turn
Nature’s autumn,
As I recall our own
Ante mortem
Of austere words
And bleak insults
Wintry gales
I never sought.
I loved you then—
Fool I was,
To hope that you
Would return that love
You never really cared for me
Nor I for you, truthfully,
And was more concerned
With status gained
In our small society.
But now when I
Walk past the pond
And watch the woods
Rewind the clock
And swirls of Maple stars
Repeat
Our final scene
On glacial rocks…
I can only smile
At our short-sighted youth
Blurred by desire
And blind to truth
But still I shed
A nostalgic tear
For one wrong turn
That led me here.
I loved you then—
Fool I was,
To hope that you
Would return that love
You never really cared for me
Nor I for you, truthfully,
And was more concerned
With status gained
In our small society.
I feel that each friend, lover or foe is there to teach us something about ourselves. Looking back I know what every relationship I ever had was about.
Great write, John:)
it's true - even wrong ways are ways to see ourselves
Those youthful memories. They can be bittersweet, but nothing like where we are now I think. Good poem John!
so true...Thanks :)
Sobering words, John. It all looks clear at the time, but hindsight reminds us of our blinders.

Ah, Whenever i sit alone in the balcony with a mug of tea, i often go back the memories of my university life try to recall those idiotic mischievous i used to do in my adulthood, these lines truly stole my heart and took me to that place again with a smile,
Thank you so much for these wonderful lines @johnjgeddes :)
Jhon has loved this poetry and the photo is great to remind one of the times of autumn. Especially the end:
Best Regards
Fabulous words to trigger memories of youthful emotions and the intensity of feelings despite our tender years. It always amazes me how a season, a fragrance, or a fleeting scene can bring instant recall of relationship milestones from many years ago; be they positive or negative to mind. That nostalgic tear may well have had a drop or two of relief in it especially as it was shed about the wrong turn made.........all part of the journey which led you to the right turn. Love your writing @johngeddes
