The story of Dante Alighieri.

in #poetry5 years ago
Hello Steemers! Today I will tell you the story of Dante Alighieri.

Well, you don't believe it, we don't know much about Dante, we don't even know with certainty the year he was born but many historians place him in 1265, it was sure between the month of May and June because if they read carefully the divine comedy in some verses of the part of Paradise, implies that it is Gemini.

We do not even know if his real name was "Dante", some historians maintain that he was baptized with the name of "During", and the real surname of his family was "Alaghieri”, not "Alighieri". But wait what we do know is that he was born in Florence and that his parents were the merchant Alighiero de Bellincione and Bella Degli Abati, who died when Dante was 5 or 6 years old, leaving him and his sisters orphans as mothers.

His childhood and youth coincided with a time of peace and bonanza in the city, two years after the death of his mother he met the daughter of Folco Portinari, a girl almost her age that she fell madly in love with, her name was Beatriz , Dante from that moment existed for her, dreamed of her, loved her secretly, loved her without selfishness, knowing that she had no hope, idealized her and thanks to that love made her her muse, sometimes she went out to see her pass and that made the day happy. It sounds romantic but if you think about it, Dante was the stalker of the town, at 18 he still did not speak to Beatriz, but he watched her constantly in the street, sometimes he followed her discreetly home.

Dante reflected his love for Beatriz in his poems, and although she married a wealthy banker, Dante did not stop loving her (and chasing her in the street), but it all ended when Dante's poems became famous, his verses arrived At the hands of Beatriz, when she read she felt humiliated and offended by that show of unhealthy love, she punished Dante with his contempt, she did not return him a smile as before nor to look at him, but dante did not stop loving her and idealizing her . That love, new in the literature inspired the romantic writers of the centuries to come, but that's another story, for the time being that of Dante and Beatriz ends when she falls ill perhaps because of the plague and dies leaving Dante sunk in a terrible depression.

As he did in life he followed his beloved at a distance so as not to offend her, and so he accompanied the funeral procession from afar, when everyone left he went to his grave and broke down to mourn inconsolably, he really loved her.

3 years later he married Gemma Donati, she knew that her husband was in love with the late Beatriz and despite this she gave him children, love and tranquility so that she could dedicate herself to her works and to her philosophical studies. Dante loved two things in life, one of them was Beatriz and the other was his beloved city and running out of the first the city seemed sadder. Alighieri like most Florentine men of the time, was involved in the conflict between guelphs and Ghibellines (he even fought in the battle of Campaldino), that conflict in short was between the church (supported by the Guelphs) the Holy Empire Germanic Roman (supported by the Ghibellines), well Dante was on the side of the Guelphs and they ended up defeating their enemies.

Dante after the conflict is engaged in politics and the Gülefos are divided into two factions with conflicting ideas, the black Guelphs and whites that is where Dante was, for 1300 after being a member of the council of 100 is chosen as one of the 6 magistrates of Florence, was perhaps his most productive and happy time, loved to serve his beloved homeland, worshiped with fervent devotion his land but political issues were going to spoil all his dreams and ambitions.

The Dante debacle began because Pope Boniface VIII wanted to occupy the city militarily and sent Carlos de Valois appointed pacifier of Tuscany, the government of Florence reacted very badly because they wanted to separate from the papal influences. To avoid a conflict with the pontifical states Dante is sent as an ambassador to propose a peace treaty to the pope but he makes him a prisoner, since he wanted at all costs to take Florence and during the time he was retained, the opposing Guelfs took control and They accused Dante of corruption, sentenced him to death if he returned to Florence.
Total that when finally released they no longer have friends or work and all because of the war.

In the end he was only sentenced to a two-year exile and imposed a heavy economic fine, but since he could not pay for it, his exile became for life. Disgusted with politics, he went to Verona where he learned that Henry VII of Luxembourg invaded Italy, now the power was in his hands and furious he wrote letters to him and how much character could asking him to destroy the black guelphs (besides insulting him).

Meanwhile in Florence, Baldo d'Aglione forgave all the White Guelphs except Dante for sending letters of hatred, when Henry VII was crowned king of Italy he remembered that many asked him to defeat the black guelphs so he went to Florence and He did. When he saw that Henry VII had absolute power Dante wrote and asked to meet him, the king accepted and Alighieri was close to obtaining forgiveness and return to his city but Henry VII was poisoned and Dante never got the happy interview.

At that time he spoke a Tuscan dialect that led to what is now Italian and in that dialect he began to write a novel, which they say that by not having a sad ending, he considered it could not be considered a tragedy, so he called it " Comedy "(the divine came later)

The Divine Comedy deserves a separate post, if you want then I talk about it, the characters that Dante is in hell and the symbolism that hides for now we finish with the story of Dante.

In 1315 Uguccione della Faggiuola controlled Florence and finally granted the pardon to Dante, not only that gave him full amnesty and allowed him to return to the city as long as he submitted to a public council where he would be recognized as a criminal.

Dante was sad, and did not accept the offer.

Florence was his other great love and so he spent his life waiting for Florence to grant him forgiveness under honorable terms, finally that total forgiveness came, and he was recognized as an honorable citizen. The trouble is that Dante had died more than 500 years before.

He was 56 years old and died just after finishing the third part of one of the most important works of Italian literature, the story of Dante is that of two parties that were not valued, Dante who spent the night yearning for what he never had, like Beatriz , or return to Florence and Florence that never valued it until years after his death, they even built a tomb (which is still empty)

For thinking about what he did not have, he never valued that he had a great wife, children who loved him, and lived in beautiful cities that appreciated him (such as Ravenna), that the story of Dante serves as an example, we value what we have in place to live frustrated by what we do not have, to value the people around us and even ourselves, we will never live this moment again, we will never be as young as now and many prefer to live complaining about what they have, what they do not have and even its appearance. That does not let them enjoy life.

By focusing on the goal you are losing the way and that path, believe me, it's amazing and it's worth stopping to admire it and enjoy it.

End.
