Dear TWiT:

If you have seen things I've shared in the past, you might know that I'm obsessed with Technology and been critical of some of the changes you've made in the past. The past few years have been a bit rocky over there with various controversies, studio changes, show cancelations, etc. For a while, I tuned out of all but one show (All About Android) cause things had gotten to a point where a lot of it was just uninteresting.

In May of 2015, you started to fix a lot of the issues by first bringing back The Screen Savers, a show that basically started TWiT and your fanbase. Way later in January 2016, you made changes that fixed lots of the issues from simplifing the lineup by merging shows, returning to covering big events like CES, and more. I won't go too in-depth here but you can see this Google+ post on your official community I made back then for that if you missed it.

So that brings us to now. You just announced some big changes for this Fall and like I did back in Dec 2015, I want to share my thoughts and what changes (if any) you could make, then I'll look back at the suggestions I made in that Google+ post and see what was changed and what wasn't.

Show Changes

Tech News Today (TNT)

First off might be one of the biggest change you've ever done. For anyone whose not TWiT, Tech News Today is one of their biggest shows. Hosted currently by Jason Howell and Megan Morrone, this show is exactly what it sounds like, a daily newscast of Tech. Think like NBC Nightly News but all tech oriented.

In 2016, you changed to those two hosts (replacing Mike Elgan who wasn't bad but you completely changed the show from a fun, lighthearted newscast to a super serious boring one) and cancelled a compaign show called Tech News 2Night. Now, you are changing it from a daily show to a weekly show, becoming Tech News Weekly and are also focusing more on interviews and in-depth discussion instead of headlines.

I feel a bit conflicted with this one. Often there's weeks that have such little news that a daily show isn't needed but also there's weeks with so much you might not be able to pack it into one weekly episode.

The bigger issue I have though is the interview part. Your other big flagship show is This Week in Tech (TWiT), a show that's has a panel discussing the weeks news in depth. So what's the difference if both are in-depth and often have interviews? I think a weekly headlines show that goes a tiny bit more in depth is fine but a show that's mostly in-depth and interviews is basically the exact same as TWiT so why even bother having both?

I'm gonna wait to see what happens before calling judgement here but as of right now, I think this move doesn't make much sense.

Home Theater Geeks (HTG)

HTG is a show hosted by Scott Wilkinson about Audo/Video equipment and other theater things, today you canceled it. Gonna be honest here, wasn't ever a big fan of this but it did have a decent following.

For this one, I can see why it was cancelled as it's a bit more niche and Scott will still be doing segments on The Tech Guy and possibly The New Screen Savers. Plus Scott could easily restart it on his own site via crowdfunding or find a new network like Dick DeBartolo did with The GizWiz and Tom Merrit with Cordcutters.

Know How (KH)

KH is a show that has tutorials for tech. A few years ago it was mostly beginner focused but Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ replaced the original host and made it all non-stop about Drones basically. That was so madding. In 2016, you expanded to two days a week and replaced a show called Coding 101 with the 2nd airing. This made one episode the new drone show and the other more of the old beginner things from software, hardware, and they even did episodes on plants.

Today you announced it's going back to one day. You didn't say if it's going back to only or mostly drone stuff but if it does, I'm definitely gonna stop watching. Bad move imho.

Suggestions and 2016 Recap

Okay so let's start by recaping what suggestions I made last time:

1. Merge iOS Today and MacBreak Weekly into an Apple Today/Weekly
2. Rename This Week in Google since it's always more than Google
3. Merge All About Android and Android App Arena like you did iOS Today and iFive
4. More Variety in show topics
5. Retrying a more professional TV-like show similar to Game On which flopped cause how massive the budget was

So out of those, which happened?

1. Nope
2. Nope
3. Yes
4. Nope
5. Yes (with The New Screen Savers, the new TNT, and some others)

So 2 out of 5, not really good but then again a lot of these were personal nitpicks more than actually bad. Like even though This Week in Google is named badly, it's still a good show despite name.

So what changes am I suggesting this time around? Well in addtion to the 3 Nopes above:

1. Update more shows to a more professional style like you did with TNSS and TNT. It doesn't have to be full on but here's an example of a couple of small tweaks:
   1. Don't show the lower third at all times. TNSS and TNT are good about this (still not perfect), only show the show logo unless a lower third is needed.
   2. Give some shows updated logos. Their flagship show, This Week in Tech, has had the same ugly gradient logo for 10+ years and the logo is different from the intro to the lower third to the podcast art. Make them consistant also.
   3. Give some shows proper intros. Most are just a stock background with the podcast art and title/date. TWiT, TNT, All About Android, and TNSS are great examples of great intros and more shows should be like that.
2. Bring back something like Game On. Maybe not the exact show but gaming is a big part of Tech so having some kind of gaming show would greatly enhance the lineup.
3. Update the Bumper at the beginning of each show. You guys have a new logo animation you've been using for channel promos (like the one for the new Tech News Weekly) so why not use it at the beginning of each show instead of the old 3D animation you've been using since you moved to the Brick House studios back in 2011-12
4. Bring back Tech News 2Night. Okay this one needs a bit of explaining. While it was good that you got rid of it in 2016, that was considering you had two daily tech newscasts. If you are moving Tech News Today into a weekly show, bring back a super short headlines show that's 10 minutes or less for each day. Doesn't have to be called TN2, heck it doesn't even have to be a show, it could just be exclusive to TWiT Live since you guys always talk about becoming the CNN of Tech.

Back in 2016, the changes sounded great and ended up being great. This time, I'm comflicted. The changes don't sound too terrible but they also sound like mostly a step back in my humble opinion. I can tell you guys are greatly trying to improve and sometimes changes that sound bad might be good. For now, I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt and try them out but I might not end up not liking them.
