Colchicum Speciosum : beautiful flowering wild plant
Garden owners often go beyond planting only vegetables and fruits. They also want to make their space look pretty. To do this, they plant different kinds of flowers.
Some prefer traditional ones like asters, lilies, gladioli, dahlias, and peonies. Others look for something different and plant wild flowers that bloom beautifully. One such plant is the impressive colchicum, which will be the focus of this article.
Colchicum speciosum is a perennial plant that belongs to the Colchicum family. It naturally grows in warm places like Georgia, the Caucasus region, the Krasnodar area, Iran, and parts of Asia Minor.
The plant can grow up to 40 centimeters tall. It has an elongated bulb-shaped root called a rhizome, which measures about 5 cm in length and 3 cm in width. The leaves of a mature colchicum are about 3.5 cm long at the top and 7 cm at the bottom, with a total of six leaflets.
Colchicum magnificum starts to bloom in late August or September and keeps flowering until late October. During this time, up to four flowers may appear on the plant. The flowers can be pink or purple.
When the leaves and stems die back after flowering, the plant produces fruit in the ovaries. These fruits ripen during spring and grow alongside the new leaves. The fruits finish ripening in July.
It is important to remember that colchicum is a poisonous plant.
