Walka z blokami jest iście donkiszotowska. Wryły się w krajobraz miasta, okopały na ustalonych pozycjach i chyba tylko wojna totalna może je stamtąd ruszyć. Pozostaje tylko zignorować je albo polubić. Bo nawet te proste klocki z utopijnych wizji socjalistycznych architektów mają swoje warianty i odmiany. Przykłady lepsze i gorsze, mniej lub bardziej udane. W efekcie powstaje plattenbau despair albo art brut

The fight against the blocks of flats is like a Don Quixote's journey. They buried into the landscape of the city, entrenched on solid positions and only total war could move them from there. Only solutions are to ignore them or to like them. Because these simple blocks from the utopian visions of socialist architects have their variants and differences. Examples of better and worse, more or less favourable. The result is either "plattenbau despair" or an "art brut".

Lubię bloki Północnego Czechowa. Można by zgadywać, że chodzi o ich formę - klatki schodowe wystające nad ostatnie piętro budynku, czy też inne architektoniczne smaczki, którym brak blaszakom z Tatarów i Bronowic. Prawda jest taka, że podobają mi się ich kolory.

W Polsce niełatwo znaleźć betonowe bunkry rodem z La Defense i Londyńskiego Barbicanu. Zamysły modernistycznych architektów, aby bloki były podobne do białych transatlantyków sunących przez miejską przestrzeń rozbiły się o prozaiczne problemy. Po pierwsze: socjalistyczne budownictwo było niewydolne; masowa produkcja sprawiła że budynki były marnie wykonane i do bólu proste. Po drugie: w mentalności prostego człowieka szare=brzydkie. Trudno się zresztą dziwić, bloki z wielkiej płyty przegrywają w starciu z przedwojennymi kamienicami. Aby ratować niszczejące relikty socjalizmu, zarządcy budynków litościwie pomalowali je w radosne barwy. Jako że najtańsze kolory farb to te pastelowe, każde blokowisko przypomina teraz przedszkole. Albo raczej oddział zamknięty szpitala psychiatrycznego.

I like apartments in Northern Czechów. You could guess that it's about their form - staircases protruding above the top floor of the building, or other architectural details, which buildings clad in corrugated metal sheets from Tatary and Bronowice are missing. The truth is, I like their colours.

It is not easy to find in Poland concrete bunkers like in "La Defense" or London's "Barbican". Modernist architects' idea that the blocks of flats should be similar to white ocean liners gliding through the urban space was smashed by mundane problems. First: the socialist development was inefficient; mass production made the buildings poorly constructed and pretty plain. Secondly: in the mentality of a simple man "grey=ugly". It is not surprising, however, that blocks of flats lose against pre-war tenement houses. In order to save the decaying relics of socialism, building managers mercifully painted the buildings in joyful colours. As the cheapest paint colours are the pastel ones, each block of flats now resembles a kindergarten. Or rather ward of a psychiatric hospital.

Na Czechowie stoją budynki, które wyłamują się z obłąkanego trendu tęczowych blokowisk. Utrzymane w prostej palecie barw - dwukolorowe; beżowe, szare, kremowe - do ideału trochę im brakuje, ale w tłumie pisanek wyglądają elegancko i zachowują resztki godności. Szarość zginie we mgle, przysypie ją śnieg, przyćmią zielone wiosną, a ogniste jesienią liście. Próby pokolorowania rzeczywistości są skazane na porażkę; kolor zdominuje przestrzeń, a uczucie brzydoty powróci ze zdwojoną siłą.

Są również na Czechowie miejsca, które fascynują mnie, nie z powodu estetyki a klimatu. Są to handlowo-usługowe centra dzielnicy, labirynty oddziałów poczty, supermarketów, bibliotek, gabinetów lekarskich i barów, przetykane kioskami i pojawiającymi się okresowo straganami. Wyrosły w połowie lat '70, gdy na Czechowie stawiano pierwsze bloki. Przez lata przybyło im kilkanaście warstw farby, szyldów i graffiti. Tutaj zbiegają się ścieżki wszystkich mieszkańców czechowskich osiedli.

Some buildings on Czechów are breaking out of the mad trend of rainbow blocks of flats. Painted simply - two-coloured; beige, gray, cream - they are not ideal, but they do look elegant, retaining some dignity. Grey will vanish in fog, it will be covered by snow, dimmed in spring by green leaves and in autumn by fiery colours. Attempts to paint reality are doomed to failure; colour will dominate space and the sense of ugliness will return with double the strength.

But other places in the district are fascinating me, not because of their aesthetics, but rather because of atmosphere. These are shopping and service centres of the district; labyrinths of post offices, supermarkets, libraries, doctor's offices and bars; with kiosks and market stalls appearing in between. They rose in the mid-1970's, when the first blocks of flats were erected in Czechów. Over the years, they received several layers of paint, banners and graffiti. Here, the paths of Czechów district's estates inhabitants meet.

Os. im. Henryka Wieniawskiego / H. Wieniawski Estate

Centrum osiedla im Henryka Wieniawskiego znajduje się na ulicy Kaprysowej. Do ważniejszych punktów należą 27 filia Miejskiej Biblioteki Publicznej, Urząd Pocztowy nr 56, Pizzeria&Pub Ence-Pence i firma dostarczająca internet - Enterpol. Poza tym żłobek i kilkanaście mniejszych punktów usługowych. W ciepłe letnie dni przestrzeń pomiędzy budynkami wypełniona jest przez drobnych sprzedawców warzyw i owoców. Pomiędzy nimi człapią starzy ludzie z pełnymi siatkami zakupów. Wieczorami ta przestrzeń pustoszeje, a okoliczni żule urządzają klub MMA na zapleczu supermarketu Aldik. Taki jest cykl natury.

The centre of the H. Wieniawski estate is located at Kaprysowa Street. The most important spots are 27th branch of the Municipal Public Library, Post Office no. 56, "Pizzeria&Pub Ence-Pence" and Enterpol, an Internet provider. There is also a nursery and a few smaller service points. On warm summer days, space between the buildings is filled by small-scale sellers of fruit and vegetables. Old people with fully packed shopping bags waddle between them. In the evenings this space is emptying, and the local bums and drunks have their fight club in the backyard of the Aldik supermarket. Such is the cycle of nature.

Osiedle im. Stanisława Moniuszki / S. Moniuszko Estate

Wstępu do osiedla Moniuszki broni warownia z betonu i blachy falistej. Poznaczona graffiti i obwieszona reklamami, dominuje okolicę. Wejście wiedzie przez ciemny tunel, przynajmniej od strony Alei Smorawińskiego - jednej z głównych arterii Lublina. Wysokie betonowe ściany i ciemne przejścia przywodzą na myśl szemrane alejki którejś z azjatyckich metropolii. Centrum usługowe na ul. Jana Kiepury powstało w 1985 roku. W jego ścianach mieści się Dzielnicowy Dom Kultury Spółdzielni Mieszkaniowej Czechów, prywatny gabinet lekarski, filia biblioteki miejskiej, supermarket Stokrotka, szkoła tańca i apteka.

The entrance to the Moniuszko estate is protected by a fortress of concrete and metal sheets. Marked with graffiti and covered with advertisements, it dominates the area. The entrance to it leads through a dark tunnel, at least from the side of Smorawińskiego Avenue - one of the main arteries of Lublin. High concrete walls and dark passages remind of the shady alleys of large Asian metropolis. The service centre on Jana Kiepury Street was established in 1985. Its' walls house the District Culture Centre of the Czechów Housing Cooperative, a private doctor's office, a branch of the municipal library, a supermarket, dance school and a pharmacy.

Osiedle im. Fryderyka Chopina / F. Chopin Estate

Budynki w centrum os. im. F. Chopina przy ulicy Braci Wieniawskich powstały na początku lat'80. Stoją osobno, nie tworząc spójnej całości. Jeden z nich mieści bank, szkołę tańca, salon fryzjerski i gabinet stomatologiczny Orto-Profil. Drugi pocztę i siedzibę administracji osiedla. W trzecim znajduje się kilka sklepów. Pomiędzy nimi targ - zbiorowisko blaszanych kiosków oferujących owoce i warzywa, mięso, pieczywo i ubrania.

The buildings in the centre of the F. Chopin estate at Braci Wieniawskich Str. were built at the beginning of the 1980's. They stand on their own, not forming a unit. One of them houses a bank, dance school, hairdressing salon and a dental clinic. The second; post office and the administration of the estate. In the third one there are several shops. Between them there is a market - a cluster of tin kiosks offering fruit and vegetables, meat, bread and clothes.

Jednym z największych problemów każdego miasta jest jego rozwój. Metropolia się rozrasta, powstają nowe osiedla, a odległość do centrum się zwiększa. Każda dzielnica potrzebuje swojego własnego centrum. Rynku, placu, parku. Tutaj zbiegają się ścieżki mieszkańców robiących zakupy, załatwiających różne sprawy, spacerujących. Osiedlowe centra żyją własnym życiem, zarastane przez targowiska, szyldy, graffiti. I właśnie ta żywotność mnie do nich przyciąga. Jedyne, czego potrzebują to odrobina kultury wśród dziesiątek supermarketów. Istniejące domy kultury i biblioteki to nie wszystko. Potrzeba również kawiarni i restauracji. Miejsce już jest, trzeba tylko uczynić je zdatnym do życia, a nie tylko mieszkania.

One of the biggest problems of every city is its' growth. The metropolis is growing, new housing estates are being built and the distance to the city centre is increasing. Each district needs its own centre. Marketplace, square, park. This is where the paths of residents walking, doing groceries and other things meet. Centres like this live their own lives, overgrown with marketplaces, banners, graffiti. What attracts me to them is their vitality. The only thing they need is a bit of culture among dozens of supermarkets. Existing community centres and libraries are not everything. You also need cafes and restaurants. There is already a place, you just have to make them fit for living, not just for existence.
