This is a new building of postmodern architecture.
The new building of the theater has a very original project, which its authors, headed by Sergei Mirgorodsky, the chief architect of the Ukrainian SSR, designed not for Kharkov, but for Kiev. The building was built extremely long: 21 years (1970-1991).

The architecture of the building is built on the contrast of the large overhanging "slab" of the two upper floors and the complex plastic of the entrance halls, foyer and other rooms of the lower floors. The theater has two auditoriums: a large one for 1500 and a small one for 400 seats.

The entrance to the box-office is decorated with a decorative composition "Music by N. V. Lysenko" (sculptor S. Yastrebov).

The building is lined with artic tuff.
In 2007, the fountains in front of the theater were reconstructed, and the space in front of the theater was called "Fountain Square" .
