Ancient artists - A photo journey
A low hill set among the arid scrub, covered with sun-baked basalt rocks and desert plants. Much like thousands of similar hills scattered across New Mexico...
Except that this is the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site.
Located in the Northern Chihuahuan desert and framed by the Sierra Blanca mountains to the east
it contains over 21000 petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) representing various animals, human figures and many geometric shapes. The site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and their website has nice section if you would like more information @blm.gov/visit/three-rivers-petroglyph-site as well as many other online sources.
This isn't meant to be an educational blog about this fascinating place but instead my photo journey, so here are a small assortment of petroglyphs that I photographed on my visits to the site. Some are clearly animals, some look humanoid and most are fascinating designs of an ancient imagination.

Wow thanks for the share - I love rock art...we have some near me, but most is now locked off as people have vandalized over the years.

Fortunately this spot is pretty isolated and has staff on site. Vandals have damaged some of the petroglyphs in the Albuquerque petroglyph sites.

it's a bad problem around here too (i'm in the driftless area of Wisconsin). Lots of "treasure hunters" have used chainsaws to cut out petroglyphs of caves in the area so that they can end up as art in someone's home. It's amazing what people will do for a buck
