Bamburgh Castle at Sunset: IR Photos (free for you to use on Steemit)steemCreated with Sketch.

Introduction

Infra-red photos can have a haunting quality which can make for some great photos.  Whilst looking for new photos to post for Steemit4free - I found some old IR photos which I hadn't got round to processing.  I think these have a dark feel that really fits with this time of year.  I also hope some of you can make use of them in your own posts - maybe a spooky poem or a fantasy themed story.

The Setting - Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Caslte is a beautiful but also inhospitable place on the Northumberland/North Sea Coast.  Not only can it get very cold but there is an almost permanent gale blowing in off the North Sea all year round.  Like much of England there is also a strong likelihood of rain at ALL times!

You can also really feel the history here.  Looking off to the sea - if you squint hard enough you can almost see the fearsome site of  those Viking Ships coming to raid the terrified locals.

These were taken at sunset with very cloudy, windy and intermittently rainy weather.  It was difficult due to the variation in light conditions and sometimes extreme dynamic range.  IR photography can be challenging as the objects you expect to be bright can be dark and objects that are normally darker can be bright.

It is also easy to pick up varying amounts of noise due to temperature variations.

These were partial colour shots but due to not having the Canon Photo processing software anymore (which is needed for correct white balance - LR/PS can't do it right) - I processed these without colour.  For more information on Bamburgh Caslte check out the Wikipedia page.

These are all free for you to use on Steemit under the Steemit4free terms.  I haven't put all the shots here so if you would like to take a look at the others or download them you can get them here.

I hope you like the shots - let me know if you can use them for something:)

13 - This is just to show the beautiful sky.  IR seems particularly good at capturing clouds.

14 - This shot shows the Farne Islands which are a few miles off the Bamburgh Coast.  They are famous for their large Puffin colony.

Thanks for sharing @thecryptofiend I adore wacth your works!

Thank you my friend and I enjoy yours:)

Thank you very much! I will use one of them in my fantasy story!

Thanks. Send me a link if you have time:)

These are insanely cool @thecryptofiend! I've always wanted to try and convert one of my old camera's to IR just to play around with it, so cool.

Thanks yes IR is cool. Sadly I had to sell my converted camera after one of my portrait lenses died to pay towards a new one. I have a D7100 that I don't use much and will probably get converted again. It's not cheap (was 250 pounds a couple of years ago) but it is great for landscape shots.

Nice shots. I like how dramatic the sky looks in IR.

Awesome and sunning views @thecryptofiend !

Thank you very much:)

The building looks rather desolate but the setting is spectacular

Nice capture. Black and white give a more mysterious look to the scenes.

Up voted and your upvoting my newest content about my love for art , I will feel appreciated.

You are welcome.

You got me at "spooky". Thanks for numbering the images. I think more people should do that. #6 was a nice catch in portrait to get those birds. #7 might be my favorite because the sunset just behind. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

You're welcome. Thanks for your support:)

I correct myself. Favorite is #10 in landscape with sunset. I likey.

Cool. I like that with the sunset too. In all honesty they are all at sunset but the movement of the clouds due to the heavy wind meant the light kept being blocked and then breaking through little gaps which would give the effect you see in number 10. It is tricky because my old Canon 450D was struggling to accommodate the dynamic range. In regular light it would have been even harder to catch the shot, I think IR reduces the dynamic range a bit which makes it more manageable.

Yeh, that is the funny things about clouds during sunsets. They certainly can make or break an image. I was out two days ago at the beach. Probably 100 people in my vicinity waiting for the sunset with their cell phones ready. Now, there was a small layer of clouds covering the horizon. The sun dipped into those clouds and then everyone started to leave and thought it was over. It was perfect for me because I knew once it finally did hit the horizon, the sky was going to catch fire. Yup, it blew up red and pink. It was spectacular. I will show you the image in a few days when I finish post. Of the 100 people, probably only 10 saw it with me. I guess my point is that patience is the key with clouds. I agree with you, on the clouds of #10. Once the suns rays peek through the cloud, it can really add to an image but happens so fast, it's gone in an instant. That is so trippy these are infrared.

I know exactly what you mean. You have to be quick! Look forward to seeing those shots:)

Wow that castle looks awesome! I'm going to check out the Wikipedia page now. Great photos, thanks for sharing.
