Roosevelt Island Lighthouse

On one of my morning walks I decided to go to Roosevelt Island and head to see the lighthouse I had seen looking across at the island on walks in Manhattan

The Lighthouse is called Blackwell Island Lighthouse, also known as Welfare Island Lighthouse and Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, is a stone lighthouse built by New York City in 1872, The lighthouse is approximately 50 feet (15 m) tall

Vertigo Warning - this is another post where people who suffer from vertigo may want to skip as it is looking up shots

The nest shot is fine but the third photo is looking up the Lighthouse.

Here is a closer in shot showing it's Octagonal shape

Beautiful lighthouse. Is there an operating observation deck upstairs? I would love to get in there :))

I did look when I was there and looked online there doesnt seem to be a way to go up the ligthhouse :(

Sorry ... it could be a great viewing platform. Interesting views for photography

Ohh yeah I would love to go up there the views would be cool

We have built a "corn" here. Showed her once. Here I dream to shoot from there. Both the city and the Gulf of Finland with islands and forts. Everything is at a glance

That sounds so interesting

Being built in stone makes this so impressive, an Octagon shape is appealing, something very different from normal rounded base. Built in a time when stone masonry work was high in demand, demanding good detail the designers name would be in ruin if not giving the best of work at that time.

Nice place to do a photo shoot, enjoyed views you presented, is this a lighthouse allowing you to climb to the top viewing platform?

I fellt the same about this lighthouse it has such a cool style to it, It didn't appear to me that there is any way to climb the platform

Many lighthouses don't allow you up, or you have to book specific times. This one looks so interesting, imagine the view across the stretch of water from up there.

Although on creaking knees, steep climb would most probably need to take a few hours for me, also do not enjoy ascending high places.

Yes thats true I don't think this one allows people to climb it after doing some research online, my knees also struggle sometimes going up and down stairs

Nice shots of this remote historic beauty ....

I do love lighthouses and this one has a cool style to it I hope your weekend has started well

Howdy JJ! I love lighthouses and that one is a beauty. Is it still in operation? Hey, I finally made it to the League results so I just sent you an sbi share, congratulations on another solid win with good numbers!

Firstly thanks for the SBI Share :) and yes as far as I now its still a working lighthouse,

I think it's really cool when the lighthouses are that old and still working. I think so many of them have stopped operating because of all the modern guidance technology.

I wonder if its working for its original effect or just for looks these days as your right so many of them now rely upon modern technologies for sure which this one probably does not have

Yeah you're probably right, it's probably lit up just for the dramatic look!

A lighthouse not lit up at night just isn’t right lol

That looks like a pretty fancy one, really! The background is quite a contrast to it, with all those more contemporary structures. Nice shots!

thanks, it sure does have such cool style doe sit not thanks for your visit
