Double Overpass of Norris City

in #photography6 years ago

An abandoned rail line runs along US Route 45, heading out of Norris City towards Eldorado, Illinois. This railroad's tracks seem to have been removed long ago, but an old overpass for the railroad still stands alongside US-45's overpass. It seems like a lot of effort to build two overpasses over the flooded dirt field road, County Road 400 N. Yet, the two stand, both with a long history of graffiti scrawled on them. I'll make a separate post of pictures that focus on the graffiti, but for now, let's enjoy the the structures themselves.

Skipping to the end quickly, this view shows both overpasses from the farthest North, looking South. The front overpass is for the railroad and the far overpass is US-45. After this peek, we'll start from the other end and head North, towards here.

A short frontage road off of US-45 gives easy access down here. At the farthest South, we'll look at US-45's overpass first then head North towards the rail overpass.

Having passed through the US-45 overpass, here we look back South towards it.

Now we turn back around and continue North to look at the railroad overpass.

Going through the railroad overpass and turning back South towards it, we can see both overpasses again.

Climbing up on top of the railroad overpass was made easy by the path you can see along the left.

Here we are on top of the railroad overpass and looking South at the US-45 overpass.

Looking North off the railroad overpass, we can see down County Road 400. I found quite a surprise at the ditch you can see down there. You can see water over the dirt road a little ways down. I think the road had flooded out recently, but there were several larger fish trapped in the ditch.

Here is a video of the fish just swimming a little in the ditch. I think there were four of them, but you can see two good in the video. They didn't look like they were doing well, but they were still moving around.
