Today is July 4th, but no fireworks in Taiwan hehe :) So I bring you photos from the annual Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival held in Pingxi!
今天是七月四號，看到許多人在Steemit上發煙火照片慶祝美國獨立日，那我來分享臺灣的天燈節照片吧！

Historical Uses
習俗
Sky lanterns were used in ancient China as a signaling tool in wars. Historians have named Zhuge Liang as the inventor of the sky lantern. He was a military strategist during the Three Kingdom era of Chinese history, popularized in the famous "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" historic novel and various video games based on said novel.
Nowadays, people release sky lanterns to bring blessings and good fortune as a tradition in China and Taiwan.
天燈也叫孔明燈，歷史書上紀錄是在三國的時候由諸葛亮發明的：
孔明燈相傳源自中國四川平樂古鎮，三國時代，此鎮乃為軍事重地，諸葛亮當時被司馬懿困於平陽，諸葛亮算準風向，製成紙燈籠繫上求救信息放上天空，最終得以脫險。維基百科
現今在臺灣及中國，放天燈是一個象徵祈求平安、祝福、幸福的活動。

Although they are beautiful to look at, sky lanterns are fire hazards while also causing littering problems. The remains, once on the ground, may also cause harm to animals that may ingest it.
天燈着火可引發火災，而其殘骸對環境照成污染及生物傷害。

Should they be banned?
天燈釋放是否該禁止？
Well I think smart minds can come together and design environmentally safe, and fire-hazard free sky lanterns. Bio-degradable materials should be used to prevent damage to the environment. I totally think we can prevent harm to the Earth while preserving traditions!
我相信聰明的人類應該可以想辦法做出無火災危險并且可生物降解的天燈，達到維護地球同時保存習俗！

So freakin cool! I have always wanted to go to one of these, my wife and I absolutely love sky lanterns, we used to buy them all the time just to light off, but now we do it mostly for special occasions. Thanks for sharing this, I don't think photos of it ever get old :)

Wow, that is impressive. Very nice photos as well. I agree with your ideas, nice to improve them so they can still be used. Used to find those funky silver party balloons in the woods all the time, 100's of miles from where they came. And they last a LONG time. Thanks.

One time I saw one crash into a tree and it caught fire!
Yee haa!!! Crazy stuff. I'm sure they could start a house on fire, if droughty enough in the area.
