Springtime is special in the Alps because of something called the “lapse rate.”

If you are a climber you might have heard of this. It is simply the relationship of temperature and elevation. On average you can expect the temperature to drop 6.5 degrees C for every thousand meters of elevation, or 3.5 degrees F for every 1000 feet. Learn more

Frühling ist wegen der sogenannten "Lapse Rate" in den Alpen etwas Besonderes.

Als Bergsteiger hat man vielleicht schon davon gehört. Es ist einfach das Verhältnis von Temperatur und Höhe. Im Durchschnitt kann man erwarten, dass die Temperatur um 6,5 Grad Celsius pro 1000 Meter Höhe sinkt.

Thus in the Alps the mountains seem to be in a different season, especially in April and May. Soon the valleys here will be vibrantly green with fresh growth, the meadows will be green and yellow from daffodils, and the fruits tress will be pink and white. The sky will be deep blue and the mountain tops will still be snow capped – it is a particularly beautiful time.

So scheinen die Berge in den Alpen, besonders im April und Mai, in einer anderen Jahreszeit zu sein. Bald werden die Täler hier grün sein -- die Wiesen lind grün und gelb von Löwenzahn, und die Obstbäume mit weißen und rosa Blüten. Der Himmel wird tiefblau und die Berggipfel werden immer noch schneebedeckt sein - es ist eine besonders schöne Zeit.

This year the springtime has been slow in coming, but in my previous post I mentioned the fantastic flowers of the cemeteries of the Bavarian alpine community of Ruhpolding and I want to share just a few examples with you today. I could have made hundreds of photos, the people of Ruhpolding are quite amazing – what a beautiful spot.

In diesem Jahr ist der Frühling langsam vorangeschritten, aber in meinem vorherigen Beitrag habe ich die wunderschönen Blumen auf den Friedhöfen der bayerischen Berggemeinde Ruhpolding erwähnt und möchte euch heute nur einige Beispiele vorstellen. Ich hätte Hunderte von Fotos machen können, die Leute von Ruhpolding sind einfach unglaublich - was für ein schöner Ort.
