Hummingbirds in Colorado
I did not grow up around hummingbirds. Every time I see them, I'm fascinated. They amaze me with their acrobatics. Sometimes flying so fast that they only appear as a blur. I love that they can flap their wings so fast and actually hover quite still. Sometimes they will give you a very close fly-by, always completely in control. I wish I lived a bit closer to the mountains so that I could watch these guys every year as they pass through on their migratory route.
A friend invited me up to Blackhawk, CO for dinner. Being up in the mountains, they had a hummingbird feeder on their back deck, and the birds were very active. I was glad i had my camera with me.
Fun Fact:
Some of the smaller species of hummingbirds can flap their wings at 80 fps (that would be...flaps per second!)
Fun Fact: A hummingbird's heart can beat at 1200 beats per minute. Holy ding-dong...that's really fast!
Fun Fact: A blue-throated hummingbird has been measured taking as many as 250 breaths per minute. (see also:@rebele93 doing sit-ups)
Fun Fact: A ruby-throated hummingbird can fly non-stop over 500 miles across the Gulf of Mexico.
Fun Fact: Hummingbirds go into a trance-like state called Topor overnight to stay alive. They drop their heart rate, body temperature, and their metabolic rate so that they don't starve to death overnight.
Fun Fact: Hummingbirds can live up to 12 years.
Fun Fact: A hummingbird nest is about the size of a thimble.
Fun Fact: Hummingbirds can move their wings in a figure-8 pattern
Fun Fact: Hummingbirds can fly backwards.
Fun Fact: Hummingbirds spend their winters basking in the sun down in Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, or Central America.
