Medieval Fortress

This picture was taken at the "Medieval Fortress of Șiria, Arad County, Romania".

Șiria village boasts rich historical medieval traditions. The locality, attested in the XIVth century, was the residence of a principality. In the next century it became the residence of a vast area that included much of present Arad and Hunedoara counties. This huge area has belonged for a while to Iancu de Hunedoara (hun. Hunyadi Janos, eng. John Hunyadi).

Șiria village is located in the contact area of Mures river, Arad Plain and Zarandului Mountains. This mountains are perfect for practicing different sports like hiking, mountain biking and paragliding.

Not far from the locality are the ruins of the Șiria Citadel, former royal fortress. Documented in 1318, has been the possession of John Hunyadi (1444), then the Gheorghe Doja rebels occupied it. It was also the military garrison of Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), because its important strategic location, until 1785 when it was destroyed by the troops of theHabsburgs.
