Yesterday's Tree Slaughter

in #photography6 years ago

We had some very strong winds (US English: hugely violent storm, UK English: stiff breeze) yesterday in The Netherlands, and after it had passed over I went out to check a bit of nearby forest for tree damage.

There was plenty. Quite a few of the bigger oak trees didn't survive:

Some trees were torn to shreds:

Three trees in line toppled over without breaking, but the next trees up survived, and so did this house:

The root systems had ripped open the soil far enough to expose the layer of loamy clay that was used to seal the walls of the nearby farm house:

The big (imported) sequoia had lost a few big branches ...

... revealing some unexpected colouring inside:

And that concludes your roving reporter's reportage. Thanks for watching!

PS. Lesson: a near miss is still a miss:

Devastating

Pooh Bear: "Blustery day"!

So sad... I think trees downed in any way is a sad thing... Especially when humans cut it down! Sad that these suffered the storm so badly... Amazing devastation

lucky the big tree does not fall on the house...take care

Tree got to big to bend in the wind.

Wow. Incredible👌

Thank you

Yes, it was quite heavy yesterday! I was happy to see the young mother with her pram just escaped the falling tree.
Your pictures are beautiful though!!
What is English a fantastic language (US English: hugely violent storm, UK English: stiff breeze)! Great. You can almost hear the stiff upper lip.

Indeed. Understatements, and sarcasm and irony, seem to be ill-understood in the colonies.

Some beautiful purple heartwood there but I always feel sad when I see the destruction of trees.
Thank you for sharing some beautiful pictures!

So do I. However much I like looking at the patterns and colours and enjoy the smell of fresh wood, it is still a sad sight.

I can't look at a Oak tree without remembering that it was a "nut that held its ground" no matter the conditions it was in.
