Ciao a tutti,

Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!

Pomposa is a monastic village in the municipality of Codigoro in the province of Ferrara , in the Northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna. It is best known for the Pomposa Abbey, a Benedictine monastery famous for the Carolingian manuscripts preserved in its rich library.

The church, founded in the 6th century A.D., was the seat of a community of Benedictine monks and reached the peak of its importance after the year 1000.

A true lighthouse of culture, Pomposa had one of the most extensive libraries of the time. Among the personalities that made it so famous was the monk Guido da Pomposa who invented the modern musical notation.

The structure is divided into three main nuclei: the church, preceded by an elegant lobby and, next to the bell tower, the monastery and the Palace of Reason. The oldest of the three is the basilica of Santa Maria (late VIII century), but at an earlier stage there may have been two small churches. The bell tower, built in 1063 by “magister Deusdedit” stands independently next to the basilica.

The Abbey church is decorated with 14th century frescoes; the floor is covered with mosaics of great value, with sections laid in different periods (from the 6th to the 12th century) and in different styles.
Of the great monastery there only remains the chapter house, the dormitory above it and the refectory, which overlooks the courtyard where the corner pillars of the ancient cloister (XII century) stand. In the centre there is a fifteenth century Venetian well-head.

As from 1977 the Pomposa Museum is housed in the room once used as a dormitory. The exhibits are a collection of materials of the church and remnants of the building, recovered during numerous excavations or due to chance discovery.

Pomposa is famous for its food and wines, also listed in the "Strada dei Vini e dei sapori - La via del grande fiume".

Thing to see: the Pomposa Abbey, the church of Santa Maria, the Pomposa Museum, the ancient cloister, the bell tower, Pomposia Imperialis Abbatia (medieval show in June).

what an amazing construction, I really enjoyit thanks

Great to know below. Another amazing place picture. Thanks for sharing.

Among the personalities that made it so famous was the monk Guido da Pomposa who invented the modern musical notation.

You're welcome!

This is great journey place

As is my habit- after reading your post I did a quick search on Pomposa - A beautiful place by all means.

For the Abbey church I was even able find the images for frescoes:

Amazing stuff!!

Yes, I agree!!

The tower reminds me of the tower in Piazza del Campo in Siena, beautiful!

Wonderful place and pics your work is amazing i really liked it ..

Il Ferrarese, come già detto, mi manca
devo decisamente recuperare

I love the architecture of this building. Did you get to go inside?

Oh yes... there was interesting frescoes!

Che bella l' abbazzia di Pomposa!

Eh si, davvero bella... l'hai visitata? Ho visto che sei stata a Ferrara tempo fa..
