Night Cruise on the Canals of Amsterdam

When in Amsterdam, there are some experience that are a must. The canals around the capital are a beautiful sight to behold and I had the pleasure of taking a boat tour around the city after sunset!

The night time cocktail cruise was the perfect way to spend the evening, sipping on some of my favourite concoctions and seeing Amsterdam light up against the night sky. The boat plays some music for everyone to vibe to and there is a nice ambience as the boat slowly tours around in the waters.

The canals are called ‘grachten’ in Dutch and encompass a large part of the city. They were excavated many years ago and were strategically developed as part of a city planning exercise. They were initially envisioned as efficient means of transport. Logistics of goods would make use of these interconnecting canals between districts.

A gentle breeze could be felt through the air as the boat drifted through the waters. Apartment blocks along the bank illuminated the night and I thought about how lucky some residents here must be to appreciate the canals on a daily basis. Perhaps this novelty wears off after a while but the area is most definitely a joy to stay in.

Bridges can be found all round Amsterdam. There are over one thousand bridges in the city and are found all around the city canals. Many of these bridges have history behind them and it’s worth getting a guide in the form of a local or literature to catch some really cool facts. There is something romantic about these bridges, perhaps I was reminiscing over too many dramas that I watched. But Amsterdam has a magical atmosphere that makes it a great place to visit with your partner. The bridge ahead a unique design that I had not seen elsewhere. It may have been the ‘Skinny Bridge’, this also has a legend tied to it.

As the cruise continued, the boat took a turn into a series of bridges that formed something similar to a continuous tunnel. The arches were decorate with lights that made the perfect enclosure. As the boat passed through, passengers went quiet for a short while. I think we were all enjoying this beautiful moment that Amsterdam was sharing with us.
