It seems that the houses are simply built on the slopes of the hill. But behind each whitewashed façade there is a whole system of rooms and corridors dug in the soft slopes of the hill at the foot of the castle of Ortihisar. The castle itself was one of the three main defensive structures of Cappadocia.
